its got some kind of electric actuator on it. Hard to tell by getting my hand back in there but I think you may be onto something! Is there just a rod coming off the mechanism that goes up and down to lock it? It has been modified for the electric locks.
I had a problem like this. I took the panel off, and reached in toward the latch. On the bottom there is a little latch that feels loose. Push up on it.
Something is unhooked. or the door latch itself is broken inside. poke around with flashlite check for all the rods and the rodends and check the clamps.
Same thing happened to my driver door about 6 months ago. I just decided to take the doors off and haven't put them back on since. I am going to put inserts and soft doors on this winter. Problem solved.
mine used to get stuck shut and wouldn't open because there was a broken window channel that jammed up the mechanism. replaced it and now it works perfect.
