has anybody ever had problems with the shoes where the friction lining is held on with adhesive instead of rivets?

long story short, I had one come apart on my 74 about a month ago. replaced the whole set (both sides) with new riveted shoes. they maybe had 15k miles on them. one on the other side was loose, but hadn't come apart yet.

then yesterday at work, one of my guys called and said he had a trailer tire that locked up.

another long story short, friction lining fell off and wedged in there tight.
I've never had a problem with them before this.

I use to have the same sort of problem with my 67 bronco, had drums all the way around & the front right lining would always crack & start to fall apart, when it was my daily driver I was replacing front shoes every 6 months..

I'd been using the glued on ones...figuring (incorrectly) that I could wear them out, and not worry about the rivets diggin into the drum. %)

This was just an FYI for anybody using drums still.

I am not sure about the rear but you can buy new Bendix front shoes. The metal part is new and so is the lining. I can't remember whether or not it was riveted. I had very good luck with them. I had no pulling. I could let go of the steering wheel and stomp on the brakes and it still went straight. If it wasn't for the fade problem I would still have drum brakes.

Buy new not rebuilt or relined.

We used to go back and forth over this the first time we saw a glued together vs riveted shoe. Wasn't too big a deal because you could always get your shoes either way and we always ordered riveted. Just because we didn't like them new-fangled "bonded" shoes.
Finally started using them on cars and trucks just because everyone said they worked fine and, as usual, they were cheaper. And in my case, they have worked fine.
Never had one fail myself, but have heard of it very occasionally. Then again, I've had riveted ones fall off too, so in my experience the riveted ones haven't done so well.
In your case though, and a few others here it sounds like, that's happened more than it should. Don't know if there's a rash of bad ones out there using inferior glue, or what. But you might as well see if they still have riveted ones available.
Oh, but first I'd go to where you bought them and see if they have a warranty. I'm betting that most brake shoe manufacturers offer some kind of a warranty. The better ones probably a lifetime one to boot. Worth a shot anyway.
