Dual Exhaust quick question

What does tying your exhaust together with an H-pipe do? I've heard you can "tune" your exhaust to a certain extent by placing the H-pipe further forward or back. Also heard that it balances the exhaust pressure. Do you weld it in front the Mufflers?

I have heard it aids in scavaging exhaust gases and enhances torque. I also heard the best placing for the H or X pipe is just past the headers...

Because of the transfer case, your limited to where to can put a "H" pipe. My understanding as where to place the pipe is to paint your exhaust pipes with spray paint, run the engine, where the paint burns off is where you would want to place the "H". (That is in the perfect world with room to install).

Hey Jeepster, can you remove your T'case without destroying your exhaust? I've been wanting to install an "H" pipe, but didn't want to block anything...

I wish I could answer that for you. The exhaust was installed by the PO. I have dropped the pipes down a little to change the starter. (removed the header).I could take a different photo for you .

I just had a complete exhaust from the flanges back put on. I asked the same question, being from the old school. He said it's to help balance the pressure between both side of the motor. It's not a must have item, it can increase torque from 1 to 5 pounds.
He's done hundreds of early Bronco's and he said unless you need every bit of your torque, it's not needed, and that would be me, don't need every inch of torque

FWIW and X makes more power and torque throught the ENTIRE RPM band. It makes for a unique sound. Most do not care for. IT is usually more raspy. An H-pipe seems to stay mellow and deep in sound. It is said that they do not make any more HP or TQ after 3k than non H-pipe.

This is information that my buddy figured out. He had his own Exhaust shop and Dyno. Many different tests with the same cars.

In our case with an EB I would do what ever would be more convienient to use/take off if needed. And keep the tone you are looking for in mind.

I am still undecided. I may do the X just for the sound. It is different. I have had it on a few of my other projects.

I had an X pipe on my 5.0 and it sounded awesome. The sound at idle was actually the opposite of what you describe RKM. The H-Pipe is raspy and louder. The X-pipe is actually quieter but makes the motor scream at 4000 +. If I could actually fit an X in the beast I would, but there's no room around the ZF. Instead, I am going to use the ends off of a 1989 Mustang exhaust for the flanges (no gaskets needed) on my H-pipe. Then I can take it off if I have to pull one of the pipes out.

Correct. At idle an x is usually quieter than an H The H at idle will have a deeper tone. Their is no words to describe it at around 4k like you said. Their is a world of a difference between the sound at 4k. Good luck on your fabrication.

I have had around 3 5.0's and a Lightning. all 3 had X's or H-pipes. Come to think of it by the end of the projects I ended up with 3 x's out of the bunch.

An H will give you the typical 5.0 similar sound deep tone. Loud but not obnoxious. The X should be much louder up on the top. It give what people discribe a NASCAR sound. I have never been to those races so I have no idea.
