Trying to fire my '76 back up for the first time in 7 years. I put an all new Painless harness in it except for the wires from the Ignition Module to the distributor. I had to do some cutting and splicing. I may have it wired up incorrectly.

All diagrams show the ignition module output wires in this order:

White
Red
Green
Orange
Purple
Black

The diagrams then point out that the last 3 wires go to the distributor. In this case it is orange, purple, black. These colors of course match the distributor wires.

My dilemna is my ignition module wires are in the following order.

White
Red
Purple
Orange
Green
Black(with green stripe)

Do I connect the last 3 wires here (orange, green, black) to the distributor or do I connect based on color and not location?

I read to "connect them by color" - from one of the Mustang sites.

What color is the plastic tab on the Duraspark ignition module? This dictates the wiring. Most common are the blue tab kind, but there are others.

Here is some info I've hung on to, I hope it helps:

Wiring the Ford module and distributor into your existing system is pretty straightforward. After installing the distributor, coil and module, you will see that the module has six wires on two separate pigtails. A two-wire pigtail will have a red wire and a white wire. The red wire is connected to the ignition run terminal on your ignition switch. This terminal will only be hot when you turn the key to "on."

The white wire connects to the start circuit. There are various ways to make this connection, but we have found the easiest way is to connect the white wire to the small "S" terminal on your starter solenoid.
The second connector on your control module will have four wires. Three of the wires correspond by color with the three wires coming out of the electronic distributor. Purple and orange mate to the two stator wires; the black wire goes to the distributor's internal ground. The fourth wire on this connector is green and is routed to the negative or tach-side of the ignition coil. The positive side of the coil is wired in the same manner as the original.

I finally had a chance to work on it this afternoon. The diagram with the plug ends helped. I needed to wire it based on wire color and not wire position. When I switched the two tires I needed to it fired up immediately.
