Stock 302. I just got done cleaning and replacing a few items on my carb. It sat for a few years before I bought the Bronco and it wouldn’t idle or run correctly so I dropped the tanks and flushed the old fuel, replaced the fuel filter and replaced the pump. The carb was really dirty inside. I cleaned everything up and replaced the accelerator pump because it was nasty and the floats because one of them was full of fuel. I added the off road kit as well while I was in there. My first carb rebuild...it wasn't bad.

First, I would like to know which vacuum port to hook my distributor to? The one on the right is manifold vacuum and the one on the left is timed vacuum. Does it matter which one it’s connected to?

Right now I’m having a few issues. It was cold this morning and when I started it up the idle was low while the choke was on. From what I’ve read, I need to turn the fast idle screw up? Is this correct? The biggest issue is the off idle surging that I’m getting right now. Not sure if that could be the accelerator pump or the idle mixture screws being out of whack.

Any tips on tuning or where the vacuum for the distributor should be hook to?

Thanks

Use the vacuum port on the passenger side. The fast idle screw is on the drivers side linkage pointing down at idle. I have to adjust mine when the engine is off 'cause you have to go full throttle to get it in a position that you can get a screw driver on it.

Thanks Mark. When I pulled the carb, the distributor vacuum line was connected to the drivers side. I wasn't sure what the difference was. I'll look at the fast idle screw later today. Is there an optimal RPM range for the fast idle while the choke is on?

I've only had to adjust mine once in the 4 years that I've had it. Since I don't have a tach, I just went out one cold morning and gave it a 1/4 turn tweak, it was idling too low at the time, bumped it up a bit. So when you start it, it may be a little fast, but you can push in the choke slowly until you hit a comfortable RPM to warm up. I know, not very scientific, but it does the trick.

On your off idle bog: In case you missed it, the squirter nozzle has a ball and weight under it. The passage running back to accelerator pump is easy to clog as is the small holes in the squirter itself. Just something to double check. I had a brand new carb that a spec of dirt was screwing with it. The ball is easy to lose if you don't know its there. The manual for your carb is downloadable from Edelbrock(installation and parts breakdown) with tuning spec's.

I don't have a tach right now so I'm in the same situation. Mine is an electric choke so I'm trying to get it set correctly. I went out at lunch and turned it up a little. I'll see what that did when I get off work. Thanks

I guess anything is possible. I cleaned it up really good and bought a carb rebuild kit so I replaced the ball and weight. If I can't get it figured out, I'll take it apart and cleaned that area again. Thanks
