Exhaust leak in winter time

I heard at one point in time that you shouldn't drive with an exhaust leak in the wintertime because the cold air may warp the piston. I don't know enough about it to know for sure so I thought I would ask you guys.
Thanks
Josh

Depends on where the leak is. If it is a cracked manifold/header or bad gasket yes you can do damage the piston/ cylinder but that is at any time of year not just winter. That is why they put plugs in the pipes on dragsters shortly after they shut down. They slow down and smooth out the cooling process so the metal is not damaged.

Never knew that. Makes sense.

Your most likely issue is that you will crack or damage a exhuast valve. If your hurting pistons then the valve is already a goner. One other thing that tends to happen is you get big back fires in the exhuast system that can damage syour exhuast as well as be a cause of the damaged valves.
