Does any of the engine parts use the studs that hold the water pump on or can I replace those with regular bolts? One of mine broke during disassembly and trying to figure out if I need to duplicate it or not.

Thanks!

I can't remember just what was bolted to them, but in some cases it was the alternator charge wire when the battery was on the other side. But on the Explorers I'm not sure if that was the case or not. Seem to remember them being on the passenger side along with the alternator, so those would not have been needed for that.

I know what I use them for however. I clamp the power steering pressure hose to them as it routes over the top then down under out of harm's way until it reaches the box. A couple of simple clamps on the studs to hold the hose and you're good.

Other than those two items though, I can't remember what all I've seen connected to them.

DUffy - Did you replace yours with ARP stainless? If so, do you have a source where you can buy individual bolts?

I am trying to decide between stainless, ARP Chromemoly and just some Grade 8 yellow zinc from Lowes/HD.

I am probably way overthinking this, but trying to avoid the corrosion issue that occurred when the original broke.

This has all the bolts and sizes listed.

The only stud bolt that I remember doing something was the one on the top left. Wire harness to crank sensor has a plastic clip that slides on it to keep the wires out of the way.

So replacing them with standard bolts/stainless bolts should be fine.

the stud on the left is the crank sensor and the stud on the right is for the oil pressure sender. And those 2 darn bolts snap all the time. real pain to deal with...

I figured out what sizes were needed and called ARP directly. They sold me each bolt and bundled it together. Seems like it was less than $50 for all the bolts to do the Serp swap.

I got some stainless bolts ordered. I plan on putting some anti-seize on the middle part of the bolt that is inside the timing cover and then put some thread sealant on the threads in the block. Hopefully that will cure the corrosion issues.

What is the current thoughts on rtv on the timing cover gasket? IS it needed? What about the water pump gasket?

You should not need thread sealant on the threads into the block as they do not protrude into the water jacket. The dissimilar metals causes the corrosion that forms in the timing cover bolt holes.

I am partial to using just a little Right stuff around the water ports on both sides of the timing cover gasket. I use a few small dabs of 3M weatherstrip adhesive on the rest of the gasket to hold it in place.
