Explorer Cooling Fan Issues

I got my front dress off of a 96 Explorer 5.0 a few years back. Took the plastic flex fan and clutch off to install my new aluminum universal shroud from Speedway Motors and figured I'd order a new fan since mine is cracked. Parts houses only show a metal fan for that year model, Ordered a later year model plastic one from Rock Auto only to find it wouldn't fit the clutch, so I sent it back and went to a Ford house and ordered a fan using the part number off the old one. Same problem, and the fan diameter is a little over 19" compared to the old one at 18". So what to do? Pick up a new clutch to match the bolt pattern or try ordering a metal fan and hope it fits? I understand that the clutch with the larger bolt pattern is a heavy duty, so I'd like to keep that if possible.

It's been recommended many times on this board to replace the fan & clutch as an assembly so you have matching parts (as you've found). If you want to keep the supposed larger clutch, buy that clutch and fan assembly.

So let me be more clear. How do I make sure I get a clutch that fits the fan? NVM, found it.

Will you measure diagonally across the bolt holes? Needs to be 3.25 inches to fit.
