Explorer fuel rail and return line

Those of you that have done the explorer swap I have 2 questions.......
1. Is the pressure side of the fuel rail the smaller port on the passenger side by the fuel pressure regulator? (Using 96' motor)

2. I'm running the stock 12 gal metal tank, what's everyone doing with the return line? How are you getting it back in the tank?

I had thought top right was inlet because it look to go into the regulator but it's the smaller 5/16 port.....

I just looked at the 96 EX motor I have on a stand, the large port is inlet > goes to injectors. Small port at Regulator is return.

I have always changed to the larger 23 gallon EFI pump in tank so there is a return line already. But what seems like common practice is to weld/add a return nipple near the top of the metal fuel filler inlet of the tank, by the fuel cap.

Plumbed my return into the filler neck vent using a PEX fitting

Ok thanks for looking at that. It's weird that the fuel doesn't go through the regulator first. Maybe it does, shows how much I know about EFI. This is a whole new ball game for me.

The regulator is nothing more than a relief valve. It holds the fuel at a given pressure. Anything over that is allowed to pass thru to the return line. Think of it like holding your thumb over the end of a garden hose to keep pressure inside the hose.

The regulator "restricts" the flow from tank through the fuel rail thus causing pressure by only letting X amount of fuel to return to the tank. More flow to the tank, less pressure. Less flow to the tank equal more pressure.

If it went to the regulator first, there would be no pressure in the rail as there's nothing to restrict it from just freely flowing back to the tank.
