Hey guy's , does anyone know if the 96-2001 explorer/mountaineer 5.0l fan clutch is right hand or left hand thread. I am wondering because they use the reverse flow water pump. I am installing the explorer serp belt system on my 302 and I need to remove one I found at the wreckers. I found the two side brackets with the PS, AC compressor on the drivers side and the alt on the passenger side and got all the hardware and pulleys but now I need the fan clutch, timing cover, and balancer. I will buy a new water pump.

Standard right hand thread on single nut reverse rotation waterpumps.
As the pulley spins the load of the fan tightens the nut.

The reverse left hand thread single nut fan clutches are used in standard rotation waterpumps (Vee belt drive like my BroncoII had).

Agreed, right tools make it tons easier. A pair of vice grips on the fan nut and a wrench on water pump bolt will suffice, but it is frustrating.

Its easier to remove when the belt is still on. I have used a racket strap and wrapped it around the water pump pulley and tied each end of the strap to the inner fenders and drawn it tight. This helps keep the water pump from turning when removing the fan clutch. I also use a hammer to smack the wrench which helps loosen it too.

I usually hit the fan nut toward the passenger side with a drift to shock it. 50% of the time it is enough to break it loose. If not, I go in with tools that look like the attached image. I take the one with the hook and catch the handle on the bolts for the p.s. pulley. this holds it in place so all I have to do is crank down on the other wrench to bust it loose...
