Explorer swap Power steering HELP!!! I’m stuck!

I’ve been struggling with the power steering on my 73 build, and I need help!

1973 Bronco with 5.0L from a 2000 Ford Explorer. 4R70 trans, NP 205 Tcase

I have a new Borgerson steering box, and a stock Explorer pump. I just cannot get any PS action

So far, I have checked the hoses for correct pressure vs return. I even swapped them just for a quick start, so see if something would happen. Nothing…

I have the pressure line from the pump to the box, and the return routed from the steering box thru a cooler, and up to the reservoir.

I turned full turns left to right multiple times before starting, refilled fluid, and turned again while running
I replaced the new Borgerson box with another new Borgerson box
I replaced the pump
I replaced ithe pump again with a rebuilt Ford pump from the dealer.
I replaced the stock puller with a Driven Smaller pulley
I pulled the return line from the reservoir, stuck it in the top of the reservoir, started it and got flow through the return.
I ran the engine at 3000 RPM.

In every case, I got the exact same result. Nothing, not even an indication or growl that something was trying to happen.

Im lost for what to do next.

I need some guidance on where to go next. Any Help is appreciated!

I’d post a pic of my truck but I can’t figure out how

Check my answer in the other thread for some questions also.

When you purge/burp/start the new setup, it's best to take the weight of the vehicle off the tires at least partially.
This means jack it up a bit even if the tires are still on the ground. Then do your 100 or so back-and-forths.
Yep, I said a hundred or so turns! For some reason our older systems (but not so much the Explorer setup you have) seem to require far more than the normally accepted number of turns to purge air out of the system.
Don't force it at the limits of course, and once you know where they are, just avoid the limits altogether. But keep pumping and turning!

Again, the Exploder pump does not seem to need this procedure, but since so many of us have had to do it many more times than the books specify, it was worth noting and maybe it will help some.

What adapter or pressure hose are you using? Sound like it’s not the right one and the pump is bypassing.

Do you get ANY fluid movement or sound or bubbles in the fluid in the reservoir AT ALL???

I had the similar problem, you may try a different fitting on the pressure side of the pump. On mine that was it, I believe I first used the Russell brand fitting that threads into the power steering pump, but turns out it would thread in too far so it kept the relief valve open and not allowing the pump to build pressure. I installed a Lee fitting, and boom had power steering!

Sorry I wasn’t able to add to this earlier for not being able to access classic Broncos all day. But Lars got you covered with the Lee fitting.
We have a fitting also that has not caused any problems that I’m aware of over the many years we’ve been selling it.
