Factory exhaust system - 76

I have a 76 and need to get an exhaust, would like to go factory; even a catalytic converter (as I understand I’ll need it for inspection sticker in MA).

I have stock exhaust maifoilds.

Recommendations please.

I’d rather not tow it to a muffler shop. It’s under restoration and I’d like to have an exhaust on it when it goes to paint shop.

Thanks

Does anyone have factory paperwork that shows the cat or picture?
CJ pony parts has one, but no cat.

I'm using the precision exhaust Y-pipe (bought from National Parts Depot). It's plumbed to a Magnaflow catalytic converter (CA version), into a Walker offset truck muffler then some generic bends over the axle and out the back. I'm using muffler clamps now, but will eventually weld the pipes together.

Works fine. If you get the y-pipe, make sure you get the correct one. One is for the exhaust valve (spacer), the other is not.

Tirewater did you go with 2 or 2 1/4”? What was the factory size?
If you have pictures of your setup, please post.

I’m also considering putting in a test pipe - no added restrictions and looks correct...

I went with 2", which I believe is factory. I'm using stock '71 exhaust manifolds (D1OE), which do not use the exhaust valve on the driver side manifold. In order for the Y-Pipe to be plug & play, you need to verify that you do or don't have that valve/spacer as the driver side manifold is different between the two.

I advocate the catalytic converter for purely selfish reasons. I dislike being stuck behind a classic car that doesn't have one as they reek to high heaven. The newer cats are much more efficient than the older ones, and will compensate for less than perfect EGR or air injection - as my truck had no trouble passing smog 2x since I've installed it.

Tirewater - do you recall the part number for the Walker offset truck muffler. I’m guessing the factory is to long once you add cat. The ones I see on line say they fit 66 to 77, I’m guessing they aren’t considering the cat.

I have a 76 that was completely stock. Had all the smog equipment and original exhaust. Smog pump was froze up. Sorry no pictures but the cat was shaped and sized the same as a football.

Here’s a diagram from the Ford shop manual.
