Finally going to work on the Bronco

Well today I am finally going to go and work on the bronco that I bought 2 weeks ago. Still paying on it till its mine but the PO said I can work on it in his garage till I pay it off. I am not sure when the engine ran last and I don't think the PO does either. The carb is missing but I have purchased an Edelbrock 600cfm man. choke for it. I have only seen it since I bought it so today will be the second time that I get to look at it. I got a new fuel filter, some pb blaster to spray in the spark plug holes, a pcv valve for the valve cover, and some ATF. The battery looks good but I have a jump box in case it is not. Think I am going to disconnect the fuel pump and just run fuel tubing from a small gas container to the carb that way I know its fresh fuel. I am not sure how old the fuel is in the tanks and do not want to chance getting anything else in the carb when trying to start. I have some idea on what lines go to the carb so hopefully they are all there. Just bought one of those pcv valves that you just push into the valve cover. Which side does it go on and which side does the breather go on? Right now there is nothing in the valve covers. I am also hoping the 4 barrel carb that I got will bolt to the intake. Does it look like a 4 barrel intake? If there is any guidance or suggestions on my quest to get this started please let me know.

By the picture it looks like a 4 barrel intake, kinda hard to tell with that plate on it but I think it is by the bolt pattern. As far as the pcv valve it would go on the passenger side in the hole in the filler cap and attach to a breather in the air cleaner. You will need another filler cap on the drivers side too one with a breather built in or a solid one ( I prefer solid myself). As far as engine start up I would pull the plugs and put some kind of a lubricant in the cylinders (marvel mystery oil is what I usually use) hopefully someone else will chime in on other stuff they use. I would then roll the engine over by hand several times to get the cylinder walls lubed up before even trying to crank it over. Check the oil and antifreeze and make sure it hasn't been contaminated before running it. Check the distributor cap and rotor as well. I would replace them anyway along with the plugs and wires. When you do get it running change all of the fluids and filters. Hope it helps. Good luck with your new toy!

I forgot to add one thing. Before you get it started remove the coil wire and crank the engine over several times so the oil pump will get the oil moving to all of the bearing surfaces. They also make an attachment for a drill, you can remove the distributor and stick it in the drive gear on the oil pump and make the oil pump work without cranking on the engine. This is a better option in my opinion. Like I said someone else will chime in with other suggestions soon.

None of my business, but I'd pay it off before spending money on something you do not own. Things have a way of going wrong. Once it's in your name maybe he will do the same thing so you can at least drive it on a trailer.

I have to agree about maybe jumping the gun. We all completely understand your excitement and how you just can't wait to hear it run. But from what it sounds like, I think you are thinking throw a carb on, spray some cleaner here and there, put gas in it ( also not real clear how your going to keep gas flowing to it without some sort of pump ) and turn it over. If the engine is in fairly good shape, you could be getting ready to do more damage than good. There are so many things that need to be checked, drained, filled, sealed, etc etc before this engine should ever be turned over. Pumps could be bad, seals could be shot, passages could be blocked. But the bottom line is this is your rig. People on here will still give you all the help and assistance that we can. My big picture advice if you really want to try and crank it this weekend, drain everything, pull all plugs and wires, prime engine oil with drill as mentioned, pull valve covers to see if oil is getting to top of engine, remove thermostat and replace, see if water will travel through engine with hose, check all wiring for breaks, exposed wires, clean distributor, check oil pan for metal shavings, check hoses and belts for dry rot. I am sure there is plenty I have missed. But good luck.

Thanks for the advice and I think I will just do like yall suggest. Might just take more pictures of it and maybe for now until I pay it off check things and just work on verifying the things y'all mentioned are in good working order before trying to start it. I would be I dont think he would mind me coming over every now and then to do little things to it. I dont want to mess up anything before getting it checkout. I guess I need to make me a check list of things to check and do before trying to turn it over the first time.

Went to look at the bronco again. The intake on it is 4 bbl and its an Edelbrock intake. Got a few more pics of it. I am just going to wait till I get it paid off and home before doing anything to it. Going to take the advice from you experts. Just need to get it to my house so I can work on it. Dying to start on it. Here is the picture of the vin on the door post. What number says what color is it? I also talked to the PO and he did see him and his friend tried to run over the bronco but it would not fire off but he said the motor did turn over. I am planning on changing all the fluid and do the things that BoureeOne said in post #5 but should I go ahead and get some valve cover gaskets, oil filter, oil, spark plugs etc... that way when I do get the bronco home I will have the replacement parts to change instead of waiting? Should I order this stuff online or should I just go to the local auto parts store and get them? It not firing off gets me thinking that it has something to do with the fuel or ignition or both. Would not mind going ahead and maybe getting a new distributor but what kind would I get judging from my picture in post one? I am just trying to have my ducks in a row once I get the bronco home thats all. I also have a chilton ford truck (Bronco) book and a ford 302 small block book on the the way so I can read and educate myself. Thanks again for all the help and sorry for all the questions.

Bronco VIN decoder:

http://www.broncohio.com/tech/ebvins.html

if you can find a good local parts guy, they can be priceless in helping you find weird bronco stuff. you never know what junk-yard swaps have been made by PO's or that you may want to do yourself

That's one thing I haven't done yet is find a good salvage yard yet. Will try and source some parts once I get the bronco home. Trying to figure out the color of the paint. The paint code is on the vin plate inside the glove box door right?

There are Pull-a-Parts in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Mobile.

Inventory changes constantly

Yeah I know. I live about less than a mile from one. Never had a reason to go to one in a while due to not having a project but I do now. I wonder what I can find in it? Any suggestions in what to look for? I know it's all what I will need though.

Any suggestions in what to look for?

a couple of things come to mind:
A combined washer tank and rad overflow tank from a mid 90's f150
A high-torque starter from also from a mid 90's 5.0L F150 -- the starter is tranny specific. if you have a manual transmission, you need the donor to be a manual too.

there are great how-to writeups in the Tech section of this site.

PCV valve

trying to get the little odds and ends for the bronco. What pcv valve can I get that will work with my 302? The valve covers don't have one in them. Can I get it locally at auto zone or pep boys? Anyone know the part number? Thanks

Almost time to get the bronco home!

Its almost time for me to get the bronco home. Should be giving the PO the funds around 2 weeks and then he will give me the title, bill of sale and Bronco! Can't wait! I have been on here everyday since deciding to get this Bronco. I just wish I could of paid all of it up front but couldn't but never the less, I almost got all the funds now. Trying to sort out how to get it home now. I have a friend that I work with that has a big diesel chevy truck and I have access to a car trailer. But I am not really sure as to what day I will be getting it and don't want to ask him till I know for sure. I was wondering instead of getting him to help going with a tow truck company? How do they work? Should I find one where the bronco is or should I find one where I live to drive there and pick it up and bring it back home? I'm only about an hour away so its not that far.
