I need some help identifying what this part is and why I found it inside my valve cover. It's the first time I've had the cover off since I purchased it (only 2500 miles as the new owner).

The are two of them and broken in thirds, made out of plastic and about 3/4th of an inch. It's a 6 cyl 170, 1966.

Yup. What they said. You may notice a few chunks of that same black plastic in your oil pan if/when you remove it. I did on mine.

Thanks for the quick responses. I was hoping for some trouble free riding before it started getting hot. Now to search on how to replace valve springs on 170. :(

I have a 302 not a 170, but it looks like the hard rubber washers under the rocker arm nuts to me. Don't know what they are called. They are above the rocker arms below the nuts and flat washers. If it's these they are easy to replace, don't have to mess with the springs. Good luck

The old pieces like to get clogged up in the oil pick up screen and can break through the pick up screen and cause trouble.
