Not necessarily dumb. Just keepin' it old school.;)
The drums worked decently enough until they got wet or hot. They also need more fiddling to keep them adjusted properly, unless yours ends up being one of the very few that has a "working" self-adjusting feature.
Mine always worked decently because I was forever fiddling with the adjustment to keep them just right.

I say they worked decently, but that was until one day when they didn't. Never had a brake fade so bad they stopped working before that. Was a real eye-opener!
Had discs up front the next weekend.

The main benefits of discs in my opinion is that they no longer require adjustment, and are super easy to service when compared to messing with all the springs and clips of a drum setup.
I got pretty good at it, having had many drum equipped vehicles over the years. But never really enjoyed it.
Discs all around for me nowadays!

Another thing not mentioned......

Lower vacuum engines, either performance enhanced or worn out ones, can lesson the ability of vacuum assist brakes. Vacuum assist boosters seem to perform better with 18-19 inches and higher of vacuum.

And they absolutely suck when the engine dies on the side of a mountain while trying to keep it from rolling down a cliff.
Not that we'd ever put ourselves in such a position of course. Just a hypothetical situation.;)

Paul, both vacuum and hydroboost stop working when the engine shut off, NOT FUN.I agree if their is more people going to drive it I would do both, I will say before my disk brake conversion, my girls and son took their driving test in my 74 with the stock set up. I decided to change, after I had really bad brake fade and got tiered of adjusting the drums all the time.
