The seal is pressed into the inside of the timing cover. When looking at the cover it's obviously the only way. A lip in the front makes front insertion impossible.

Some of those timing covers have some play on the pins or bolts they use to mount., so when you go to install do your best to make sure the seal is centered on the crank.
