Front seal

On a 1975 302 front seal,is the seal on the inside,outside or both on the timing chain cover

The seal is pressed into the inside of the timing cover. When looking at the cover it's obviously the only way. A lip in the front makes front insertion impossible.

I guess it depends what seal you use. I used the Timken seal I linked to above and pressed it in on the outside of the cover.

Depends on timing cover Two different styles your picture shows later style or replacement style ,,,early style covers the seal is pressed in from the back side.

For clarification, Early means before 1983. The E3AE-6059-CA was the first timing cover that I could find that used the seal from the outside.

1975 302, pretty much pins down the vintage of the PO's engine.

Some of those timing covers have some play on the pins or bolts they use to mount., so when you go to install do your best to make sure the seal is centered on the crank.

Thanks for all the input,found out my balancer was warn down so I installed a new one and t
he seal went on the inside now all is good
