Fuel vapor system

Hi,

So I am putting the fuel vapor system back together and have a few questions. I see four hoses, two to the main tank, one to the aux tank and according to the book one to the charcoal canister? Is this a picture of my charcoal canister? I didn't run a line to it when the body was off so I have to figure that out.

Part 2 is do I need the vapor system or is it possible to remove it?

Thanks,
Jason

Yes that is the charcoal canister, originally mounted on the frame down by the passenger front tire. A lot of people do remove all that stuff but your garage can end up reeking of gas.

I would definitely hook it all up.

You don't absolutely need it, and your truck will run fine without it. But put it back together anyway.
Your lungs and the environment (meaning, the rest of us) will thank you for it later.

To show both sides of the story, I'm pretty sure that are some here who've removed it and not had any vapor issues. But most comments after removing any of that stuff are negative and many (most?) end up putting it back on.

It's a pretty cool system. Think of it as a filter breather for your gas tanks, if that helps. As said, it keeps gas vapor out of the air, and is a particularly good thing on a hot day in a garage.

Incidentally, it is suppose to be mounted on the outside of the frame long about the passenger floor body mount area. Looks like someone moved it up into that expensive inner fender real estate. Move it back!

That one you have looks like that was used for trucks. The bronco unit was probably about half as short as the one you have there. It may hang down a bit low if you mount on the frame. They also had a metal shield in front of it to protect it from the tire kicking rocks up at it.

Or, if you don't want to use that style down low, and you have the room, you can use the '76 and later style up on the firewall near the heater hoses.
They're plastic, taller and skinnier, rather than round, and can pretty much be had from any Ford vehicle (car or truck) from '75 or so on up to at least the mid-'90's.
I've got one from a '95 Mustang that I'll be using.
