funky gauges

my gauges have started reading at half points and my alt gauge is still in the middle(not it's usual little dance). This is an intermittent problem, at times they read right, I think it might be the v.r. on the gauge cluster itself? Anyone have ant experience with this before I shell out another 30 bucks for a new one?

first check voltage and grounds.turn ign key to acc.remove temp or oil pressure wire from sender.measure voltage on wire.should be 4-6 volts pulsing.also if you have a 12volt test lite,you can put it in place of volt meter.should flash at same rate as volt meter pulses.may take a second or two to start flashing beacause of res.
