Garage floor coatings

My wife and I are under contract on a house and will have about a week to move. Before we move in I'm thinking about laying down some sort of finish on the concrete in the garage to make it easier to clean, more user friendly, purtyer, etc. I'll probably be doing it myself since funds are tight with the house purchase. Anyone have any experience with DIY products for this?

Yeah, Dad did his 40x60 building with an epoxy coating. Lots of grinding with a concrete grinder, big one that uses 2 rotating discs with 3 grinding stones each.

I forgot what brand it is, but it has held up for 14 years with no flaking, peeling or cracking.

I would suggest you use some kind of texture material at least a strip where car tires will roll, it is slick when its wet without it. We didn't do it and I have almost rear-ended several cars parked in front of me because the car wanted to slide or push the front tires.

I did the shop floor at work with a Sta-Crete epoxy finish years ago, it looks great and it has held up very well. Like the previous poster, we had to rent a floor disk grinder and then pressure it to prep the floor. The Epoxy is a two part system and a pain to mix, but simply rolls on like regular paint. Good results are all in the prep work. It also required 7 days to cure before we could use the floor (after 3 days it was ok to walk on if you took your shoes off).

Pros - It is very shiny, looks great, brightens the shop and cleans up very easily. Has held up well to constant abuse, including light fork lift traffic. Although, the area near the door where I’ve done some light welding is less shiny now.

Cons – slippery as all get out when wet.
