Hey,

What gear ratios have sucessfully been used with 36" tires? Are 4.10's low enough?

I've got the following-
351W mild
NP - 435
Dana 20
36" tires

thanks

Dean

4.56 would be better. I am using 4.88 with a 37'' tire

As always, it depends on where you'll be doing most of you driving. I've got the same trans/xfer case and 4.56 with 35" tires. Turns out I'm running close to 3000 rpm at 65 Mph. I'm planning on 37" soon so hopefully that'll get the highway rpm down a bit. If you're planning on mostly highway/street, 4.10's might be the way to go.

Where do you live, hills?, flat?, elevation?? What % usage offroad?

I live in pretty flat terrain, sea level, and will only be using mine for local mudding so I am staying with the stock 3.5 gears with 36's. Comes out to about a 14% overdrive compared to 31" tires, mild by todays overdrive standards (an AOD has a 33% overdrive).

I'm right there with OX1. Florida is flat and my Bronc is my DD as well as my mud/sand play toy. Stock gears with stock 3speed(although a 435 will go in soon) and 36" swampers. I only travel about 10 miles per day round trip and no speed limit sign is above 55 so I'm good with this combo. I just plug along around 2,000rpm and am quite happy. The 435 will be nice so I don't have to ride the clutch when I drive bumper-to-bumper traffic downtown.

,,,,,,houston is flat as a pancake & it still wouldn't be even a little okay to use
3.50 gears with 36" tires unless your are really used to slow vehicles that can barely get out of there own way ,,,,,there is no transmission combo for the early bronco that has low enough syncronized gears from first gear through the rest to allow adequate operation(none without a huge gap to second gear) even if you happen to have 400 ci,,,,3.50 gears are adequate for 30" maybe 31" ,after that you are seriously hampering the vehicles performance & most importantly kidding yourself if you think >.>>nah it's just fine

I guess it's all in what you want but I can't imagine running 36" tires with 3.50 gear, I think 4.10 would be 'OK" but thats about it. 4.56 gears get my vote! I run the ZF with 35" tires and 4.56 gears and love it, but 4.88 wouldn't hurt anything at all.

Under your Bronco
My 68 has a carb'd 302 with 4.11's and 36" IROKs, NP 435 and Dana 20. I think it takes off like a slug. I am going to change to 4.88's just because that is what I have in my 66.

My 66 runs a Fuel Injected 302 with 4.88's and 37" Wranglers, NP435 and Dana 20. That thing takes off like a rocket compared to my 68.

Depending on what you where looking to get out of it. I would think that 4.56's would be good for mild rock crawiling/wheeling and highway driving. And the 4.88's would be good for more intense rock crawling but you would be running some higher RPM's down the highway. Just my $0.02 ;D

It's all in what you want. I plan on running 31 AT's most of the time tooling around on the street because no matter what you tell yourself, running around all the time on 35/36 inch swampers just plain sucks. ;D I'll trade off that bit of acceleration so I don't have the motor screaming at anything over 50 MPH. I'm always stopped when I put it in first, so it does not need to be sychronized and rest of the gears are.

Due to the T-18, when I want to go play in the mud or run a quick moderate trail ride, it will also be fine with 36's. My broncos do not need to be any faster than they are with the dismal chassis that is under them (comparatively, even to old muscle cars). When I need to go fast (in a straight line or around corners respectively), I have a high 11 second turbo Capri and an 03 EVO.......

It does not cost anything to stick with the stock gears when you first put the tires on (if you running a 435/T-18), but if you decide 4.56's were not what you wanted, it's much harder to go back.
