Anyone recommend a good sand blaster? I have a 5hp single stage 60 gal IR air compressor. I have been researching blasters but the reveiws are horrible.

I got a harbor freight blast cab for under $200. Works great for things as large as an oil pan

The pressure pot style is a little more forgiving on your compressor vs a hopper style. Tractor Supply sells a 50lb? I think, that I've used on two vehicles and it gets the job done. Wouldn't want to make a living with it, but fine for the home garage.

It's more about the size of your air compressor than the actual sand blaster.

Agreed. I recently bought the Harbor Freight 40lb pot style. My 60gl compressor keeps up with how fast I go on the big stuff so far. I do with I went with the bigger 100lb pot style though, just for refilling reasons. I have to refil the 40lb one more often than I like to

I use one from Sears that gets the job done. Not the fastest but works good. I have done complete frames a couple of times and countless other projects.

I got the one from Tractor supply...holds over 100lbs with two big compressors pumping air into it..the feeding system could be better...wear out a bunch of valves and hoses.but blasts great lol

This worked great for my bumper. I haven't tried a frame yet. I think choice of media is equally important. If you get the wrong stuff, you'll waste a lot of time & air. Get the most-aggressive that your parts will tolerate. I used Black Beauty, which is like sharks' teeth.

check local shops other than actual blasters. I had my tub done by a local powdercoater. he has a mammoth enclosed booth and did a fantastic job for a screaming deal. Was gentle in all the places they needed to be.

Before I knew about him I was fortunate that I was able to access an industrial blaster for the frame. Towed compressor, water injection to keep the dust down, 2 or 300 lbs hopper, supplied air helmet, it was amazing but if I'd know about the powdercoater then I would have had him do it.

I have a little 20-25 lbs pressurized pot from Harbor Freight, there is absolutely no comparison to real expensive equipment.

The powdercoater uses something really neat and very fine for his media but then it's enclosed so he can reuse it. I used silica sand for everything else. It worked like a charm in the industrial system.

a harbor freight pressure pot will work. Use as small of grit as possible with the smallest tip possible or you'll never have enough air with that little compressor(i have a 60 gal, 12.5 cfm and it barely makes it), also put an extra dryer on the pressure pot inlet before the dryer they supply, it will keep moisture from plugging up the blasting hose with wet media. Good luck

I have an old gravity fed unit, been using it for years to do mirrors and glass work. In fact it was my spending money while in college. It is probably a 20 gallon tank, recently had to purchase a new gun for it. The tips are porcelain and do wear out, which will cause you to lose pressure and use excessive amounts of sand. I also use mica or glass beads, can't remember exactly correct name, to imprint into the glass and difficult to find a supplier for. I wouldn't think playground sand would be the correct media, I'm just saying to check for the correct sand. Also I use a hoodie and goggles to keep the sand out of my face and hair. I tried to blast a small chest recently with it and gave up, mine shoots such a small area that it takes for ever to do a large project.

Anyone use eastwood???

Compare the Eastwood with HF. I think you will find one is painted orange and one is blue. They looked identical when I chose the HF for about 1/2 the price. The recent HF flier has a 20% off any single item. They are also having a tent sale this weekend.

I've noticed the same with Northern Tool. Same exact chineshit with higher price!

Damn, lot of good info. I gues I will check around for blasters in the area first. I found a guy that will blast for $30 an hour but I have to bring it to him. Other than that I may pick up a cabinet blaster.

I havent looked recently, but I have an Eastwood catalog at work (few years old) that shows "Proudly Made in USA" on some of their blasters.. Now, I'm sure thats probably changed, but it may be worth looking into..

I'm beginning to look for a blaster myself and this thread has been helpfull for me as well..
