I used a kit that came with them so I'm not sure if you have to have them. I have seen them cut back significantly to eliminate small rocks from getting wedged in them. Here's a link to some I saw on e-bay this morning:

I don't have disc's on my bronco yet, but some of my other vehicles I either ended up taking them off and ohters just bent the crap out of them as not to collect debris. I think this came up before here and I think about maybe about 50/50
