Hello Bronco forum members,
I have My Grandfathers 1969 Bronco he bought new and took me to the desert ouside Los Angeles for years as a
kid, He was in the Pomona Valley 4 wheelers a group of charecters , some of whom began trapsing the High desert in balloon tired Model T's! Much of where we went is now off limits sadly. Those guys were not exactly
Sierra club admirerers, even though we treaded lightly and respected the wildlife and flora etc.I see the Bronco is a 1969, sold in 1969 as well in Upland Ca, However many items dont fit the specs for that year?
1st off are the wipers, mine are vacuum, and should be electric from what i read, The orange color I recall was always this color despite being repainted in the 70's after we rolled it on the freeway when towing a 46
Chrysler Town & Country convertible out from the Mojave, the hitch came loose and the safety chain started whipping the rear end all over the place, last thing I recall was grandpa saying HOLD ON! and we were sliding on its side and came to a stop that way, we smelled gas and boy did we get out of there fast! amazing how heavy those doors are when opening like a sub hatch!I see orange wasnt available in 69 too?? and the wing windows are somehow different according to a fellow I saw, and the windshield folds down to the hood. In addition while resurecting the old Ford I found despite
only having 52k original miles the head gaskets were bad from sitting/ well the mechanic said it had 289 heads? and intake gaskets required? I saw the 302 and 289 use the same as far as i could tell, but no 302
emblems on front fenders either? maybe removed later? My Grandpa really altered the thing too making
repairs a challenge fro me and mechanics, My brakes still are not safe in my estimation, I recalled them feeling much stronger years back? its still 4 wheel drum but has a booster on the master cylinder, replaced
2 times, master 3 times and had each wheels hardware and pads swapped for new, bled it many times and 3 shops so far have tried repaing them
to the same point, it has great initial feel , Howver after that midway to
full panic stop is nothing much more! it feels like the pedal trhow hits a wall or stops working and will not lock up or even slow the wheels much more than a slow drag to a stop way aftyer it seems to be safe, I recal grandpa towing a 24 ft trailer loaded with food, water fuel cycles, etc up and down the Cajon pass
and i would never try that as is! Of course he as did the club members did things i was afraid to try or ride in ! and couldnt walk up either! many times they were in places that if you rolled you would plummet
not roll! terrifying but amazingly the Broncos stuck like goats. One fellow a postman had a red white and
blue baja model and he was really crazy in that thing, he would back up hills after climbing them to be funny, the charecters they were, many were mechanics, welders, fabricators etc and took turns making cages
and tow hitches, adding AC under dash units swapping the dana 27 diff front ends for 44's adding big wheels
tires, currently have his huge slottted mags with 12.50 x 33 x 15 BF Goodrich KO's He had a C4 installed by a man named Stan Clark in LA who was Gas Rondas mechanic on a cammer funny car and that thing stil snaps your neck hitting 2nd gear, power steering from a truck and double shocked the front end, had a rv cam, torker intake and Holley 4 bbl i replaced with a Edelbrock, not too sure i am wild about tihe Edelbrock carb either, I remember
the Bronco running better in its day, I have had the heads redone sisnce they were of doing the head gaskets,
recored the radiator, swapped fluids, oils lubes, full tune up 2 times by 2 differnt shops, its like nobody
knows how to still repair older cars now, or even carry commonn parts let alone altered parts, equipment. I
am suspecting the brake lines being restricted as the initial attempts to bleed the original brakes which were new when it was parked for 25 years were new, but cloged 100% replacing the wheel cylinders worked, but
the pedals good 1st, but misleading in its impression it has oomph to stop, but if you stomp down beyond 1/2
braking power theres really little after htere! much to my dismay every time its returned to me "fixed"A fellow said the brakes were not adjusted tight enough? any body know if the setup is able to lock up 33 "
tires going 30 mph?)
