Grill Guard - opinions

I'd like your opinions on my grill guard. Be honest with likes or dislikes but try to refrain from being hurtful in the event you dislike - LOL!!

I've always been a fan of the 70s & 80s style grill guards / bull bars / bumper guards or whatever terminology you happen to use. When I built my '74 I wanted to purchase one for looks (I love the Bronco grill but it is pretty plain) and to functionally protect my grill (we have a lot of deer here in Northern Virginia and we see at least 5 - 10 - 20 crossing the roads every time we go out). Unfortunately like many other accessories offered back in the day, they are not now. I find lots of these for later model trucks & SUVs but not necessarily for the EB and to try and retrofit a late model just didn't seem worth the time and effort to me. I do like the one Bronco Graveyard offers but its all tubing and I'm kind of partial to the flat plate sides - so... I made my own... It was designed strictly out of my head and by taking some measurements off the Bronco bumper, grill and frame. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade so I have CAD at my disposal, so I made the bar assembly in 3D and it looked pretty good so I took the 3D files and had the side plates CNC'd from 0.25" thick aluminum plates from the CAD files and made the cross bar tubing from McMaster Carr thick walled aluminum tubing, used 1/2" threaded rods inside the tubing with coupling nuts so I could use recessed hex head bolts to sandwich the tubing between the plates - topped off with some fabricated "L" brackets to attach it to the bumper and frame. It's all aluminum construction, which is fairly light but very solid and then I painted it silver metallic with clear coat to match the flares, grill and top (didn't quite hit the match but didn't realize it until it was done - but close enough IMO)

As the title suggests, I'd like the opinions from my Bronco peers. Some may like the idea of the bars and some may not or maybe by chance you didn't but do now after seeing mine (LOL again) or God forbid, you did like them until you see mine and now you don't!! Hope that isn't the case though.

If anyone is interested in this, I would be more than happy to share my CAD files with all the particulars specified regarding materials and assembly philosophies - just let me know. I can post the files here on this site or send them directly to you by e-mail.

I am pretty proud of it, I think it looks great but more importantly, I'm proud of it because I fabricated it myself and I think it represents the bars from "back in the day" pretty well.

Look forward to your comments and glad to share if anyone is interested.

I think it looks great and period correct for an EB. I would have said it was factory built if you hadn't said you made it.

I like something that covers as little of the front of the truck as possible............the front of the bronco is my favorite part! :)

Nice bronco:) I had a similar grill guard on my 81' Bronco.

Very nice work. I always wish I had some fab skills.

I like the look of the old push bars, they just look period to me. I added one a couple months ago, which looks tiny compared to yours.

Again, well done.

I like it. Clean and strong looking, and somehow it goes well with the hood scoops.

It looks very sharp. I thought maybe a little big at first, but if I saw that many deer every day, it's just right

It looks like you did a nice job, but like Ohio Bronco 21, I prefer the cactus smasher style.

Thanks to everyone for their comments - I appreciate the feedback and compliments.

I'm going to take it one small step forward and add another bracket / mounting tabs to mount some 4 or 5" KC lights (at some point)

I started this project back in May, then my wife decided we needed to install a pool - once the pool was done, then we needed a deck - then my dad (my hero) ended up getting a total hip replacement done on August 18th which was awesome... surgery @ 8:00 AM / done @10:00 AM and he was walking by 3:00 PM and was back home by 8:00 PM all in the same day and he is doing great and walking with no walker / no cane now.

So, because I hate to sit still too long, I got back on the push bar project.

Take care and thanks again!

Your truck is awesome. I prefer the naked look, but your skills are pretty awesome and understand they serve a purpose for guys that wheel (which I don't).

I am also not keen on the Mustang emblems (I know, you didn't ask!), but I generally like cars with no trim. I absolutely love your flares and their color and how they tie into the top and your new guard, as well as wheels and tire combo and ride height.

Enjoy that awesome truck.

I think you did a great job. It takes allot of fortitude to step up and make stuff on your own especially when you have to pay someone out of pocket to cnc stuff. The only change I would make is triangular cut outs on the side plates to lighten up the side profile a little. Keep up the good work. So whats next you cant stop there.

Thanks Zonian!

Thanks 67RT.

Appreciate the comments. Yeah, the 5.0 emblem was sort of an after-thought after it was done. I had those as well as a couple of cobra emblems but the cobra's just didn't fit at all and since it has the 302, I just went with it to dress up the Bronco script a little

thanks again,

Thanks Crush - yeah I have lot of animals running around out here and trying to protect all my hard work, I think I might actually cry if a deer ended up in my grille - hoping the guard would help in the event it happens but really hoping it just ends up being for looks

take care,

Rustytruck,

Thanks a bunch for your comments, much appreciated. I actually thought about cutting some material out of the side plates but also thinking about running one more flat cross bar / mounting tabs across to mount some KC lights on, still tossing that one around.

Not sure how much more fabricating I'll be doing but I am going to install a B&M automatic floor shifter - but I need to work out some details on my console I paid $80 for. Got a little conflict on available real estate between the seats so I'm still trying to figure it out

take care and thanks again,

Wish somone made a reasonably priced cactus smasher or kind of a hybrid of it and yours.

Ohio Bronco 21,

Tell me what features you like / prefer about each - I might be able to work up a custom bar for you. I'd be glad to try
