Grille insert painting

Curious about something I just don't know for certain.

Did Ford paint the whole truck the body color and then the W. White insert over top of it or did they paint the body and mask off the grill and then paint it?

Body color then mask and white as evidenced by white overspray on top of body color on rear of many original grilles.

A few pics from a couple of a friends survivor from my archives of obscure restoration details. ;D
