Indian Harbour Bch,
I just did up my 9" using that method. Got me a few 2" and 3" round wire brushes on the end of my new Dewalt and went to town on my axle housing. Ended up taking off 30 years of paint, white, red, black.. man, right down to bear metal, then I hit up the housing with some POR 15, looks freaking top shelf!! I'll send ya a pit of you like, it came out PRO!!
-super-
BTW, I didn't use a grinder, didn't want to gouge it or anything... wire brush, and oh yeah, wear a dust mask, I had black snots for weeks!! ;D

I use a wire brush on a grinder all the time, it works great for taking off layers and layers of paint, grease, dirt, grime everything. Dont worry about scratching the metal unless you use a stiff brush. Yes wear a face mask and go to town its fun ;D

Make sure you wear your safety glasses under the face shield!! Think of a little piece of wire flying full speed into your eye!! Be careful! I used the seaweed looking thing that 3M makes. It is shaped like a wheel and it goes on an arbor to use with a drill or die grinder tool. To me it is better at removing paint than a wire wheel. It's sold at the autobody supply shops.

The first time I repainted the interior I removed the paint that way. Expect to spend a LOT!!! of time doing it. If I were to take it down to the metal again (outside that is - now have hurculiner in the tub) I think that I would try some sort of paint stripper to get the bulk off then work on whats left with a wire wheel.
Good Luck!!

If your going to rattle can it why bother to take off all the old paint? Sand it with 220, then 400 and shoot away.

I rattle canned mine and used Rustolium. No good. It is runny and hard to get a really smooth coat over the entire vehicle. I must have used 10 cans of primer, min and 15 cans of paint before I had anything decent. And I didn't do the interior or top. It also is not as hard as automotive paint.

If I were to do it again I'd get it to the point where I wanted to prime it and take it to maaco. $300.00 dollars and they will sand, seal, sand again and shoot it. I spend over 100 dollars in paint alone. Probably another $50 in misc sandpaper, sanding discs, sanding blocks. Not to mention a $25 mask so I didn't get nerve damage. The only good thing about the rattle can method is you can fix areas where it starts to rust or gets scraped (which it will easily).

yea i've decided im just gonna do the body work, prime it etc.. then take it down to maaco.. they'd do a better job than i ever could ::) controlled environment etc etc plus the paint is expensive

When you take it to maaco make sure that you have everything off that you don't want painted. They sometimes tend not to worry about over spray. We did my friends 79 cobra there and had to drive it there with no lights, trim, interior, glass, etc. and sat on a milk crate.

If you really going to rattle can it get the 2 dollar spray handle for the cans you will do a much better job. it is easier on the hands and easier to control.

Use a 3M clean and strip wheel like Madgyver said a few posts ago. They wear out but they are the greatest. Don't believe all that Maaco stuff about sanding and priming and resanding. I worked at a maaco for three hours one time. I quit, It was not the type of body work I wanted to do. If you sand the Bronco and take off any small parts a Maaco paint job isn't that bad. But you had better do the sanding. I would however let them sand and paint my washer and dryer ( they don't go out in the wind and rain ;D

Buy some chemical stripper. It works a whole lot easier and better. The stuff I used was also not Toxic and non caustic. It was a god send and made easy work of my project.
