Grooves in Front Drums

Sorry for the 1st grade questions:
1)Pulled the front drums on my 73' and found these matching grooves (pic below). What could have caused these? I've never seen a drum with factory grooves, yet they match so perfectly.
2)It it wise to change out the bearing seal while I'm in there?
3)Do you pack them by hand or with a pressure grease packer.
Amazing all the various work I've done on these Bronco's and never tore apart the front hubs.
And yes, I know I should just go to disc while I've got them apart.

I don't think the grooves are factory. What do the shoes look like? pic?

I would change the seals.

I have always packed my bearings by hand, best way in my opinion.

and yes I would recommend going to discs

That doesn't look good. The surfaces are suppesed to be flat. Looks like the brake shoes wore down and the rivets ground into the drum. I would have them turned or replaced if they can't turn them. I would also think about replacing the bearings and yes the seals. I have always packed my bearings by hand.

yes on the Disks
Pack by hand, wear latex gloves
change the seal, thier cheap
man them grooves look too perfect? First time I seen that.

The grooves look too deep for the drum to be saved.

Brake shoe rivets, I have a set just like them. One side of the wheel cylinder froze up.

All you can turn the drums is .060 per ford manual

1. Dont know if those are factory or wear grooves, but I would NOT use them. Even turning won't take that out. KWSPony is right, they should be flat. For safety sake, don't use them. (Wait till you see the price, then you will know why go to discs)

2. Always change a seal when you remove one. Best rule of thumb going. Never reuse an old seal. There are exceptions to this, but d--n few. A new seal is so cheap I dont even think about it.

3. Pack by hand. I don't wear gloves that way I can soften my hands!! A little GOJO afterwards and your ready for the dance. Some guys wear gloves, some do not. I use synthetic grease so as to minimize possible medical hazards. Been packing by hand without gloves for 40 years and I aint dead yet.

Check your other brake parts carefully. With that kind of damage on the drum, I would want to really look at the other parts.

Do the discs now. You are half way through the job anyway.
