GT-40P heads

I picked up an Explorer motor about a year ago and am just now getting ready to put it in my Bronco. I have a couple of questions about the heads though. I hear good and bad things about the P heads and am wondering just what problems they would pose to being put in a Bronco. Things like header availability and stuff like that.

Thanks guys.

I have never used them, but my dad installed a set on a 5.0 that he put in his '51 Ford. I know he was able to use regular Mustang headers on that motor. I think he had to install 90* boots on his plugs and he had to modify his spark plug socket for it to work. So you may have to get a little creative, but I'm thinking they will work.

headers are the issue.

performace wise they are better then any old school head. infact they are the best performing small block head ford ever mass produced.

Does anyone make headers for the P heads that will fit a bronco? Or is that gonna be something that will have to be custom made?

I'm using the stock Exploder (2000) mainfolds. They are pretty convoluted and have a reputation for cracking if you let the bolts get loose. they fit pretty nice. I'm hoping a nice set of shorty style headers will be available.

I got a set from Summit Racing. Ford Racing shorty headers that said they would fit the GT40P heads. I had to have the collector on the right side modified a little but so far they work great!

A little birdie told me that the BroncoHut has new headers that fit the p heads. They are going to be in stock soon so you can try them.

The long tube L&L headers from Jeffs work with the p heads. You will need to use Taylor wires with the 135 degree boots. I've had them on mine for 6 years now.

I'm not sure if I'm just lookin in the wrong spot or not, but I cant find those on Jeffs website. I would love to be able to call up Chuck for a set of his, but thats a little steep for me right now.

If your are willing to do some grinding you can use the stock 302 cast exhaust manifolds. Kbldawg is running them on his and they are working really well, however he is running some hi-temp plugs and covered them with the hi-temp boots.

The headers are the ultra flow from Jeffs. I built my efi 5.0 from scratch using p heads, Mustang injection, and old school E cam. It's backed up by a wide ratio 4 speed toploader and 3.50 gears with a detroit. The Mustang guys say I've got it all wrong, but I think it runs ok. Check out this link and judge for yourself. http://www.earlybroncos.com/memberpa...s.asp?mid=1036

what's the difference in the P heads? I just bought a set thinking that I would be able to bolt up my Hedman long tubes. Are we sure these won't work???? Thanks, Jeff VA Beach,VA

The "P" heads have spark plugs that angle straight out from the head. A the other have plugs that come out at about a 45* angle. Also the "P" heads have a smaller exhaust valve than the other GT40 heads.

I don't recall which side, but I beleive the drivers side was pretty close to being the same as a 302 head but the passengers side head was really a pain to get the stock manifolds to work.
