GT40 intake and head questions

I have a 93 Cougar 5.0 HO engine, Explorer serp. set up, and Mustang intake that I've been working on to install in my Bronco.

At a recent half off day junkyard sale I grabbed an extra Explorer serp. set up (probably be 4 sale soon), Explorer upper/lower intake w/ fuel rails, injectors etc., and the GT40 non P heads.

From what I've read so far, everybody says that you can expect about a 15% increase in HP and alot more torque just by swapping on the Explorer intake vs. the Mustang intake. Also I've read the same gains from swapping the stock HO (stang) heads for the GT40 (Explorer) heads.

The 93 Cougar motor I have specs out at 200 hp. The 96 Explorer that I grabbed the goodies off of specs out at 205 hp. (i'm pretty sure). Would I really gain 30-50 hp by installing the Explorer stuff on the Cougar motor?

Being that I have both intakes and heads and everything is torn down, I would like to install the best performance parts that I can without getting too crazy with a bunch of mismatch parts that I'll regret later. The last thing I want is to get to the last stages of wiring up the harness and have a bunch of conflicting issues come up because I swapped to the the Explorer intake and heads or whatever !!!

The Explorer has a bigger TB (65mm). Will I have any issues with the A9 computer that I have ?

Both lowers have the 19 lbs. injectors. The Mustang looks like it has a single spray. The Explorer looks to have 4. Are the Explorer injectors better?

Do the GT40 heads truly just bolt up ? I've read it's good to change the valve springs, but can I use the original length pushrods and rocker arms? Will I need shims?

I plan to order an RJM harness. When I order it do I just need to tell them what motor, dizzy, computer, upper/lower intake, and which injectors I have, or do I need to change some of the Explorer sensors out for the Mustang ones ?

I know there's alot of guys here that did pretty much this same swap. Would you mind chiming in with any recomendations, issues, pointers, problems, or let me know if I'd be better off just keeping it all Cougar engine with the Mustang intake for simplicity ???

Thanks everybody.....

The Explorer has a bigger TB (65mm). Will I have any issues with the A9 computer that I have ? Yes, the A9 will run fine with the Explorer TB

Both lowers have the 19 lbs. injectors. The Mustang looks like it has a single spray. The Explorer looks to have 4. Are the Explorer injectors better?Yes, the Explorer injectors are considered to be better.

Do the GT40 heads truly just bolt up ? I've read it's good to change the valve springs, but can I use the original length pushrods and rocker arms? Will I need shims? Yes, the heads bolt right up. You should verify pushrod length but I doubt you will need to make any changes. I just did this swap on a Mustang motor no issues.

I plan to order an RJM harness. When I order it do I just need to tell them what motor, dizzy, computer, upper/lower intake, and which injectors I have, or do I need to change some of the Explorer sensors out for the Mustang ones ? Yes you must be specific when you order the RJM harness, that is what makes it so simple and desireable, they will make it to your specs. Note, the Cougar distributor will not work with the Explorer fuel rails but the cougar rails and dizzy should work with the Explorer intake. Test fit before ordering the harness. Make sure you specify the Explorer ACT sensor and length of pigtail unless you feel like drilling your Explorer lower intake. Injector connectors are the same.

I know there's alot of guys here that did pretty much this same swap. Would you mind chiming in with any recomendations, issues, pointers, problems, or let me know if I'd be better off just keeping it all Cougar engine with the Mustang intake for simplicity ???

Thanks everybody.....

Once it is in and running you will love fuel injection.

The HP numbers are due to the cams. The HO cam is more aggressive but the intake and heads are worse. The Explorer got good intake and heads but was crippled by a more emissions sensitive cam.

65mm throttle body will be fine. There are gains to be had by mixing the better explorer parts onto the HO engine with the better cam. Nothing to loose. I don't see 15% HP gain, but there won't be a loss.

I have a friend who was hopping up a 5.0 Explorer as his daily driver. The last thing he was going to do was put in an HO cam. Never got around to doing it.
