Hand Throttle Option

I did a search and saw the bike brake throttles, the bike shifter throttles, and the available kits. What I'm wondering is if anyone has tried a thumb throttle off an atv. Seems like it would:

1. Mount well to the shifter (originally mounted to handlebars - similar diameter, etc.)
2. Have a nice long cable for routing through the firewall.
3. Be really smooth compared to some of the other options.

I'm open to opinions, ideas, etc. Just wanted to throw my idea out there and see if anybody has done it or thinks it might work.

This is a great thread! Folks for years have been loosing their legs to whatever they lost them too and convert their cars to hand throttles. I know that there is a wealth of information on the internet about hand controls for folks with no legs.

Throttles everywhere

I actually have 4 different throttle controls;
1. Foot Feed
2. Electronis cruise control
3. Stock bronco cable that sets the engine speed and holds it for when I am whinching or other wise want my base line engine RPM to be higher
4. And a bycycle brake cable mounted on my NP435 shifter.

Because of my height and the way i built my floor and seats I needed to extend the shifter a little so I made a part on the lathe that threads on to the shifter and is conical in shape to allow the brake lever to attach cleanly to the shifter.

It is one of the most used alterations I made. It is just great for those times on a steep hill when you need three feet. :)

Thanks for the info so far.

Mad: I've got the throttle control like you've shown already, just looking for something where I can "feather" the throttle more while crawling. Thanks for the info though.

00gyrhed: that's a nice setup and similar to what I've seen on a few other rigs. I'm still considering a setup like that, but I'm holding out to see if I can get some more info on the use of an atv thumb throttle.

Good idea, I'll have to look at some of the disability type setups for some extra info.

On my 2005 F-150, the cruise control +/- buttons on the right accelerate and de-accelerate the vehicle in very miniscule incriments. I use it habitually to avoid the abrubt changes that the gas pedal and the brake pedal cause. If you are running EFI then you could probably hack the computer in some way that you could use those buttons at less than 1 mph when crawling.

Probably not the right way, but I adjust my manual choke so I can get a high speed idle without activating the choke plates or circuitry. It is usually just enough to keep the motor from stalling and it is already installed from the factory. I have thought about a supplemental throttle, but I am considering a slip joint at the carb so it doesn't move during normal driving but still allows it to pull the throttle back when using the additional controller.

These all look like reasonable options for a hand throttle to help us manual tranny guys crawl. After this weekend I'm thinking this (and a lot more practice) may help me.

What I'm interested in now is the other end of the throttle cable. Looking for ideas on how to hook it up. My Bronco came with the hand throttle option so I still have the correct accelerator pedal assy for the hand throttle.

Would hooking the cable to the accelerator pedal work, or should I run the cable all the way to the throttle body?

I've hooked all of mine up like the old Dana cruise control upgrades we used to sell; connected the end of the hand-throttle cable to a 3" length of ball-chain.

So you hooked the chain to the carb/throttle body?

So you hooked the chain to the carb/throttle body?

Right to the throttle arm anywhere. The old Dana cruise kits came with an assortment of plastic clips for that purpose so you have to be a little creative with how you attach the ball-chain.

I have done it another way using marine control cable ends..but I would need a pic to show how.

So the chain, and your other method, provide slack in the hand throttle when the accelerator pedal is pushed?

I was thinking about making some kind of stud with a hole in it mounted to the throttle arm. Thread the hand throttle cable through it with one of those small set-screw type cable clamps on the other side.

Yes to your first question; that is how cruise control servos were always connected 'back in the day'. And your second method is pretty much exactly what I did on my '69. But I used a marine type cable end that is not threaded in to the throttle arm (just a post with a washer and cotter pin on backside) , so that its free to rotate and not bind the hand-throttle cable that slides back and forth through it as the throttle arm rotates. Plus the actual cable hole in the marine end is already large, threaded for #10 found on end of marine throttle cables.

Yes... Thought about that stud needing to rotate after I posted. Thanks for the info.
