Hardtop Liftgate Hinge Hardware

Hello everyone, Thanks in advance for any help regarding this question. I've checked old chats regarding this question and it appears the recommended hardware is 1/4"-20 x 1/2" with either backing plate and quick clips or nuts. My question is on the hinge itself. I purchased a pretty rough hardtop to restore and the liftgate hinge holes appear to be uniform in size but probably too large for the head of a 1/4-20. The examples of fasteners I see from vendors is tapered which the hinge is not and also doesn't play well with washers. What am I missing? anyone have pics of this connection? Thanks again

Welcome! Are you talking about where the hinge attaches to the liftgate or to the top?

Im looking for the fastener that connects the hinge to the hardtop example as I believe the holes are too big for the implied 1/4-20

The fasteners go through the hardtop and screw into nuts through a plate that sits in the inside lip of the hard top. It's a "corrugated" piece of metal. I don't have a picture with me, but pulled this from a recent posting. This owner put nutserts into it, however from the factory the screws went through the hinge, through the hard top, through the plate and into washer/nuts. The plates are available from Tom's or you might want to just try some flat stock.

The screws and nuts are part of Tom's rebuild kit but you might be able to find them in a hinge kit or individually

Thank you for the reply. I understand the backing plate hardware options. My concern was related to the 1/4-20 screw fitting correctly at the hinge hole. Perhaps the liftgate hinges I got with this hardtop have been modified as the holes seem too large. I'm gonna just order the fasteners and go from there. Thanks again.
