I got a question on heads on a 351M. I know most heads are marked with either a 2 or a 4 but does anyone know anything about heads marked with a M? I'm thinking mercury or marine. Are they any good from a performance stand point? Thanks.

All of the 351m/400 engines use the 351C-2V heads or derivatives. Differences in port and valve size ..none. Subtle..very small differences in combustion chamber volume are about the only differences other than the early head not hving the AIR passages and bumps in the exhaust ports.

All are marked with a '2" (early) ,an "M' (later) or nothing at all. Only the 351C-4V heads are marked with a '4' and were never used on the 351m/400.

The only real 'iron' option for a decent head is the Australian 2V

The letter "M" in the 5th digit of a 69-70 VIN code is the sought after 4V Cleveland head that most are unaware of.. These are the quench heads with the smallest cc's

I had a set of "M" heads that were 2V type, PO said that it came out of a late 70's truck.
Most heads that I've come acrossed with had 4, 2, or no markings on the upper corner of the heads........

Sorry to steal a post but were might one find a link to look at the aussie 2v heads and the aluminum versions that have been discussed on the board recently. Getting ready to start a new project and trying to decide which engine to use. 351w-400m-390fe. Trying to see what would be the cheapest to build performance wise?

thanks,
brian

Run a search for "aussies" or "CHI heads"

Brian, the Aussie head route is the cheapest by far for building up the 400..but the aluminum heads have advantage when it comes to dealing with the 10+ CR too. The 400 is going to be the cheapest overall ofthe three you mentioned if stroke and displacment is what you are after, although a 3.98" (410/428) crank will bring that FE in to the ballpark too.

The total trade-off combination of weight and cost versus torque and displacement is how I setttled on the 400 as the 'best' option for my builds..and I have plenty of W and FE iron in the 'pile o motors' out back to chose from, in addition to a half dozen or so 400s and a sprinkling of 429 and 460s too.

Thanks for the info guys! I found those links after I posted last night. Heads not as cheap as I thought they would be! Hey Bill, if you don"t mind, shoot me an e-mail of your engine specs and power output as I have a complete 400m I could build.

Thanks,
Brian

Please don't call it a 400m, you'll upset a group of guys from Maryland all the way down to Florida. It's just a 400, it's the 351 that gets the"M";D
