Welcome to the club!

And don't think yourself insane for getting your Fiance a old rig! I bought my fiance a 1973 VW Thing with a Porsche engine and drove it from Denver, CO to DC in two days! Now that was nuts! Did I also mention it was middle of winter and that the VW, being an air cooled car, has no hydraulic heater? It has a combustion chamber that sits over your gas tank! How safe is that!

Welcome and keep the questions coming!

You have just invested in the most satisfying ride of your life!

Indian Harbour Bch,
hey man, welcome aboard! Looks like you got a fair deal.

What exactly is it doing on the hiway? mine goes pretty stable at 70mph (wouldn't turn going that fast though) %) You could maybe need a few new bushings up front, make sure everything is tight. Keeping one of these EBs running isn't too expensive because parts are everywhere - it's the modifications and upgrades that cost... so, have no fear..

I will go almost in a straight line but if there is any (and i do mean ANY) groove in the road it will follow the groove with wreckless abandon...It's quite the eye opener...i guess at least you can't fall asleep behind the wheel in this beast because you are wide-eyed and white-knuckled the entire time..

Looks like a stock Bronco shakle (sp?) to me. Nice Bronco and Welcome!

BTW...is it me or do you have the dreaded "Bronco Lean"?

It's kind of wierd...i've read about this phenominon on several websites...it would appear that i get the "lean" only when the last turn made is too the right....it only seems to lean left....also that may explain why with every left turn (when the rig leans right) i get this popping sound out of the front left spring....you get a similar sound when you jump on the bed and the bedsprings pop... ?:? ?:? ?:? ?:?

Hello I just recently purchased a 1971 Ford Bronco with my fiance (it's her dream car). I personally have only owned fuel injected rice rockets so this V8 pushrod thing is all new to me. I have come seeking the advice of those much more experienced than me for wisdom and guidance (I freely admit that this is a foreign device to me). I hope that you can all bear with me as I ask many questions. From what I have read so far on this site it seems as though I have taken my first step on what appears to a long money draining yet fun trip. I have already seen some of this as within the first two months of ownership that rear driveline has already required a full rebuild. I have posted a few pics but they are awaiting approval....and I have my first question...This thing set us back $6500...was this a good buy? ?:? Specs should be listed below

Thanks in advance

Sean
Welcome to the board, the obsession, and the fun hobby. There is nothing too complicated about these things unless they are highly modified. Unlike fuel injected ricers, EBs dont require an onboard microprocessor to run. Once you are familiar with the basics, keeping these things running and reliable is fairly easy. Everything you need to keep yours in good shape is found right here. ~bh

Blackstar, what I mean is that you may have something more than you think on your hands. I don't want you to get too excited but wait for one of the Stroppe guys to check out you rig. They will surely be here shortly.

See if it has a dana 30 or dana 44 in it. Some early 71's had 30's I believe. Jack it up and see how much play is in the front wheels grabbing them at the top & bottom. If they wobble in and out a lot the kingpin bearings could be shot in the Dana 30 which would casue the camber to be way off. Too much toe in or tow out will cause them to dart around but not cause the camber change. Pray that it has a dana 44 in it because the kingpin job is a crappy one and Wildhorses only had a few sets left a month ago and they are the only place I could find to get them. Are the tires laid in at the top or in the front? If its the front someone may have bent the steering tie rod. If its the top its camber

That is a Stroppe rollbar. Hard to tell much else about the rig from the pics. Blackstar, could you post a few more pics? Also, what's your VIN# and DSO code. That will tell the tale. Where are you from? I might be interested in buying your rollbar if you want rid of it.

PS.... Forgive me if some of these questions are already answered in the previous posts. I admit I didn't read them all throughly. Thanks.

And If Anyone could help me with this as well

here are a couple of pics of the t-case sticks...the position you see them in now is 2WD..all the way down is 4WD high and all the wasy up is 4WD low....as near as i can figure. When we bought the rig the dealer had no idea so we drove for the first month in 4 high and only discovered that by accident....there are no labels and the only thing written on the trans case itself is DANA...can anyone identify this...one gentleman seemed to think that it may be an atlas case...is that possible?

Yes, those pics do help. Upon further inspection it appears to *not* be a Stroppe rollbar. At least it's unlike all the ones I've seen. It kind of looks home-fabbed. The sharp 90 degree connection at the back is what I'm talking about. It should be a smooth bend as seen here:

Very cool rig regardless though. Good luck!

Does this pick help you with the twin stick pattern? Just remember to leave the right stick all the way back (rear wheel in Hi) and the left stick in Neutral when driving on hard surfaces.
