Indian Harbour Bch,
Got the linkages hooked up swell-like (shifts awesome now) ;D drove bout 15 miles, and stopped for gas and tranny fluid was coming out the top cover, slowly. I filled fluid up to the check level hole while it was cold. 1) Is there too much fluid in it when it gets hot, from expansion, hence the puking?

2) Curious, does anyone else hear the gears wind up? I didn't have the tunnel covers/boots on and I could hear the whine of the gears though all 4 gears. Noise seemed to get quieter as it got hot. Is this OK?

3) Tranny got hot, like not scalding hot, but hot like you could keep yer fingers on it fer about 5 seconds or so before it got too hot. Is this OK?

BTW, I sealed up the top cover with gasket material and RTV blue.
I'm using Valvoline Synthetic gear oil 75W-90 in the tranny.

Thanks so much
It's running awesome and shifts great, real quick shifts too. Feels so tight with new EVERYTHING down there, no more clutch chatter (new clutch, resufaced flywheel, all new hardware... ;D

There is a vent on the top cover with a big gasket the same size as the cover. Is this gasket on? The vent holes are staggered.

As for it being hot. It is normal for a rebuild trans.

Maybe you have to much oil in there.

Indian Harbour Bch,
Yeah, I made a new top cover gasket out of cork gasket material you buy by the foot. I didn't poke a hole in it though ??? ???

I'm hoping I have too much oil in there

Anyone else have any input? I'm a little nervous about driving it now...

You need paper gasket that covers the full tin cover area with a small hole punched at the end opposite the vent hole on the cover. The gasket is part of the breather system and is made a special way with holes punched in specific areas. It is best to go to a Stick-parts supply house and get the correct gasket. A cork gasket here will rupture, it's just a matter of time. You will hear gear whine especially if your shifter boot is torn or removed. The gear noise should be significantly quieter in 4th. If you hadn't run synthetic, chances are, your trans would probably run 20 degrees hotter than it is now... (I have owned two 1965 K-Mustangs with top loaders in them, been there, done that...)

Indian Harbour Bch,
Thanks BH. I appreciate the info.
Gear whine: yeah, I was driving around w/no tunnel cover or boots - no worries there.

Now, I guess I'm going to have to pull the tranny again if I need to put in the correct gasket?????

:p :p :p I would say you need the right top gaskit and then it wont make presser and spit out oil as for the noise you are going to hear a little from most trans's good luck with your toy. ;D ;D ;D Bill 8) ::) :p

If I recall correctly that tranny did whine but not any more than any other manual I've heard. The whine may get quieter as you break it in more. There isn't many miles on it right now.

The leaking is a surprise to me since I used RTV seal on the top cover and never had that happen. Doesn't the top Cover have a Vent hole already in it?

You have another option instead of pulling the Tranny and that would be to make an access hole in your floor that you could bolt on and off as needed. It'll be a tight squeeze removing the cover but maybe easier than pulling it out.

I'm glad to see you finally have it installed.

Indian Harbour Bch,
Thanks for the info folks.

Joe,
Yeah, the top cover had a vent hole in it already, but I read that gear oil would spurt out that hole and make a mess, so I tried to be good abuot it, and I bought some gasket material. Otherwise, during my drive the thing ran awesome. Fast, crisp shifts, nice tight feeling...

I already talked to my local tranny guy. I'm going to remove my shifters and driveshafts, and he's going to pull the tranny replace with the correct gasket and replace. He said he could do it real quick. I mean with the right equipment, it NOT a hard job. I'm just sick of wrestling with the thing while using some crappy tranny jack that I just rented for 40 bucks, when it only cost 65 for the hour of labor it will take the tranny shop. I'm going to get the proper gasket this week and hopefully have it done this WE...

-super-

Thanks again all....
