I just put in the one off my 77 parts truck...and came up with a 72.....

That's very likely to happen. The last letter in the VIN was used to indicate which part of which year. Frinstance A & B were the first and last halves of '67, C & D were first and last of '68, etc...

When they reached the end of the alphabet (in '75 or early '76) they just started over, but cycling thru letters much quicker. So many '76 &'77 Broncos appear to have the VIN of a Bronco 5,6,7.. years older.
