So Friday I finished up installing power steering on my '66 with the 6 cylinder. The old manual box was worn to the point it was almost unsafe.
The first test drive with a new box and power was amazing! It's a night and day difference and so much more fun to drive now that I'm not working constantly to go straight. I am not sure why I put off doing it so long except for the cost but it was worth every penny! Now on to saving up for the 302 and AOD...

The brakes I upgraded before I ever drove the thing so I didn't get a chance to compare old vs. new. I've been going several years on the worn out manual steering and it is just so amazing how much better it drives now. It makes me want to turn it into a daily driver. I can't wait for some more nice weather to get it out on the road.

Where did you get the P/S kit/parts? Is it a 170CI? Thinking of the upgrade for my '66 170 as well! What did it cost to do the upgrade?

Yeah I was planning on waiting for the other upgrades that are in my head to do this one as well but went ahead and did it and I am glad I did.

I ended up buying the borgeson kit on amazon. I ordered the V8 kit and the bracket for the I6 seperate so I would have the parts for the future V8 upgrade but the part # for the 6 cylinder kit is 999051. Their price is $735 which is way cheaper than I could find it anywhere else and saved a ton on shipping. My only complaint was a lack of instructions but it is all pretty straight forward. The kit inlcudes the bracket, pump, hoses, shaft u-joint and box.
You will also need a 2 groove crankshaft pulley and a 2 groove water pump pulley. There are several places to get those. I had the old crank pulley that didn't allow for the bolt on additional pulley so I had to totally replace it. I picked up one from Summit but Tom's sells the bolt on one if you're lucky enough to have the pulley it can bolt to. The water pump pulley I picked up on ebay. It was for a Mustang or Falcon I think. I did have an issue with fitment and had to shave down the water pump pulley. I'm not sure if it was the aftermarket crankshaft pulley that was really the problem or what. The two pulleys were touching when I first installed everything.
I also had a problem with my front bumper and how the PO had it welded to the frame it interfered with the steering box but other than that the kit went on quite well. The box in the borgeson kit is the 3.75 turn box so it is a much quicker ratio than the old 6 to 1 and makes a huge difference when you're parking and maneuvering.
All in all I think I spent about $950 or so including a trip to autozone for a 49" belt and a quart of power steering fluid.
If you guys have any other questions let me know. It was definitely worth the money in my opinion. Much safer than worn out parts and much more of a joy to drive.
