hot fuel pump update: figured it out

well after two months and tons of $$$$ replacing things i figured out what was making my fuel pump get HOT. about three months ago my vent tube from the tank was leaking and i (and the mechanic i was using then) made a loop from both outlets of the vent to dead end it. he told me that it wouldnt matter. today someone told me to take the gas cap off and drive it. it did fine and i could feel it sucking air. the gas cap is vented but it was not getting enough air and the pump was creating a vacuum and burning up the pump. today i dead ended one of the vent tubes and placed another tube with a fuel filter on it fixed to the top of the tank. does anybody have a better idea for the vent of the tank. the tubes to the carbon box are in bad shape. will what i did take care of the problem. thanks for your help.

The vent tube just aids the air to escape when filling your gas tank. It still has to vent thru the gas cap when it is in place. Hence, your gas cap may be bad. :p

What the fuel pump was doing was pulling a vacuum. You fixed it by adding the filter so that it can breathe. Good going. I would not expect any more trouble out of it...

Only thing I would recommend is moving the filter you put on up high so no water can be sucked in at all...that would cause some funky problems...

Not if you have the gas cap on while driving. The cap is not allowing the tank to either vent or allow air in to replace the spent gas.

cracker, why would the vent tubes on the tank let enough air in to prevent a vacuum from forming in the tank. with it vented at the top of the tank it would seem that it would not have to vent at the cap?

make sure if you keep that vent tube and filter set up that you put it HIGH up... imagine off camber and dumping fuel.

Let me get this straight, you took the vent tube off of the original setup and plugged one end (?)and on the other, you added a fuel filter to allow air while keeping dirt out? If this is correct and you are still having the problem. Try switching your filter around. Depending on the brand, it may work better one way, as compared to the other. The vent tube assoc. with your tank and the filler neck is to allow for faster gas filling, alllowing the air to escape while filling the tank. The gas cap is supposed to allow air in as well as vent air out. I would still change the gas cap before trying anything else, worst case, you spend $5.
