I've been playing with early broncos for years and considered myself at least fairly knowledgable. I was doing a little research last night and discovered that I can use a PMGR starter (92-93 5.0 mustang auto) to replace my direct drive starter???? Is that it? Just replace the starter and do a little rudimentary re-wiring and your done? It CAN'T be that easy.
What's the catch??:?

There's no catch. It's that easy. Not sure on the mustang part but I used the manual transmission starter from an F150 with a 302. I think I paid 70 bucks and every parts house on earth has it in stock.

Just make sure you match the transmission since the engage depth is different.

Are you saying that the starter in the ebay ad will bolt right in and work with no other mods or additional hardware? I have a stock 302 with the stock 3-speed transmission.

Click on the seller's "other items" and then search 302 starter. There will be several choices depending on the manual trans you have (less than $60). I simply bolted mine right in. You do need to change 2-3 wires which is very easy. They come with a simple one page instruction sheet.

cranking with twice the torque!"

Yeah no problems running them as you stated just a few wires to change and as workerbee said make sure you match up transmissions they do have a different depth range.

yeah I looked at all the 302 starters and none said they would work with my setup. I have a 3 speed. any ideas most of the M/T said they work with most 4 speeds.

I'm running a late model starter with a 3speed manual. Works great. If I recall correctly, the one for a late model automatic is the correct one. But I'm not 100% sure.

I think the 4speed and the 3 speed should have the same flywheel and same mounting specs.

The link below should be helpful or confuse the matter even more =)

I pulled mine from a 94 f150 at the junk yard with a MT and it works fine with my stock 3spd.

you just move the big cable from the starter to the hot side of the solenoid and run a new 10ga wire from the small lug on the starter to the cold side if the solenoid. done.

The small block starter fall into two different catagories. Manual or automatic transmission. The only oddity, the mustang 5-speed (the T5 for sure). It is a manual transmission, but uses the automatic starter. Other then that a starter for an automatic transmission is for an automatic, a manual is for a manual.

So if you see a starter for a 4-speed, or out of a stick shift truck, that will with the Bronco 3-speed.
