How do you remove exhaust manifold studs?

You know, where the exhaust manifold meets the pipe. The studs threaded on both ends? I pulled the exhaust when i was working on the tranny and I'd like to replace the hardware to make things a little easier next time. Two of the bolts came out when I turned the nuts, but the other two left the studs in place.

I'll pound it with penetrating spray, but what can I grab it with to give it a turn?

I found some great replacements in the parts store that have squared off ends that you can get a wrench on to install and uninstall them.

You can try threading 2 nuts onto the stud and locking them together then try to unscrew the stud. Another option would be to use vise grips and clamp onto the stud very tightly and try to unscrew them that way, but Id save that for a last reserve effort. Good luck

Heres a trick I used that worked amazingly well.

Prop up the manifold so the studs are vertical. Heat them up real well and around where the stud goes into the manifold melt in some candle wax. I dont know why it works, but does it ever. Had one nothing would work on. Old ford guy told me to do this, heated it up with a propane torch, a little wax from a candle, a little more heat so the wax would flow and voila it turned right out.

Great idea. I'll have to add that to by book of tricks for the next time. Thanks for the input.
