How to get 3 kids in a back seat?

What rear seats or mods have you guys done to fit 3 kids in the back seat. I was thinking of narrowing the rear fender wells and putting a wider seat back there but not sure it is worth the work for just a few inches.

Thanks
Cory

TBP has a fold and tumble seat that's 40" wide. That's 5" more than the OE seat. Hickey sold a skinny seat that mounted between the front seats back in the '60s & '70s. The only other way would mean a bench seat on top of the wheel wells, or two benches facing each other like the Toyota Land Cruiser. Maybe you could retrofit the FJ40 back seats into the Bronco.

The problem is that most kids now need to be in a very large child seat. I added a third seat belt once and it would work without a child seat. That was back before I had witnessed the effects of a crash. Now I have given my back seat away and turned the Bronco into a two seater. Life is too dear for such folly.

As an old fire fighter-paramedic I've seen and treated many accident victims. With seat belts the rear seat safety of a Bronco compares well with the balk of vehicles. Now that my daughters are married off I've taken the rear seat out too, but the memories of our family outings are worth too much for me to believe they were a mistake.
I did however, forbid them to ride on the back of a motorcycle.

Oh I agree and also have lots of great memories of riding in the back of a station wagon or pick-up without a seat at all. I remember once a load of camping gear falling over onto my kids in the Bronco because I went into a turn a little too fast. No one hurt but the wife was a lot shaken over it. After that I installed tie-down hooks in the Bronco for cargo but the kids still didn't need seat belts. I can't tell you when my attitude changed but even with these great memories, my family is too precious to me to take chances.

I fit 3 kids wide in the rear. I made the seat and its the full width between the wheel wells. I also have 3 4point harnesses and full family cage back there. I dont see it as any less safe than the rear of a jeep or some of these tiny imports. I know the cage is beefier than what comes in a heep.

I have a fold and tumble from Toms and was able to put 3 seat belts in the back. My kids range from 5-7-10 and they fit fine. I think I am going to add 3 point belts in the near future though.

I used the Trailmax II Fold and Tumble. My three kids 8,6,4 fit just fine. They absolutely love riding in the Bronco!

Yes please share how do the car seats fit. I was thinking if they had a 5 point harness maybe I might not need to use the car seat?

When I was growing up my brother and I had to sit on the floor boards behind the rear bronco seat if our sisters were with us, ahh memories :)

I had the fold and tumble seat in mine. It sits much lower, so taller people aren't so cramped. My suggestion for you would be to use the fold and tumble, but mount it as far back as possible and create a car seat mount in the center directly behind the front seats. Getting in and out with a hard top would be a pain but it ould work. Option 2 is don't use a seat, but create a car seat mounting system that allows you to pack them in tighter, perhaps going over the wheel wells for part of it. How ever, make sure you are using a family cage, if you are packing them in like that. The few hundred dollars spent on it is well worth the safety.

I'm facing the same problem. My 12 year old is 6' and 210 lb. I'm going with the 40" wide rear seat for two of them, and a Ranger seat up front, with the smallest sitting with me and the wife.

Oh, he wants one.. 4 more years though LOL

Actually, now is the time to start. I'm still working on the one to give my oldest on his sixteenth birthday, and he turned seventeen yesterday! Hope to finish it before my 13 year old turns 16 now.

Got mine when I was 13. I have learned soooo much through working on that old eb over the last 30+ years.

If he takes interest in restoring this 72 and wants it, it's his. He seems to like 'tuner' cars at the moment.. NO IDEA where that came from, he's seen me restore about 100 Mustangs..
