Hunting and Non-Hunting Ring and Pinion

I never heard of this before. I was told about this today. I had no idea there was such a thing. Just thought I would share this.

"one tooth of pinion gear is grooved and painted, while the ring gear has a notch between two painted teeth. If the paint marks are not evident, locate the notches.
Proper timing of gears is set by placing the grooved pinion tooth between the two marked ring gear teeth.
Some gear sets have no timing marks. These gears are hunting and do not need to be timed. Non-hunting and partial non-hunting gears must be timed."

Google books link that mentions this briefly

I saw a link that said that if the number of teeth on the ring and pinion won't divide evenly then its a hunting gear set. Is this true? So a 3.00:1 is a non-hunting gear set since it is an even number? 4.11:1 is a hunting gear set? Or does it have nothing to do with this?

There are actually 3 versions,
non hunting, the tooth on the ring gear lands on the exact same tooth of the pinion every time. 3.00:1 perfect example
Semi hunting, the same tooth lands on the same teeth on the pinion gear every time, but not just the one tooth and not every tooth. 3.50 and 3.33 are examples.
Then hunting patterns where a single tooth on the ring gear will eventually touch every single tooth on the pinion gear after enough revolutions.

Modern gear sets are made accurate enough that there are no match marks that need to be lined up. That and very few gear ratios that we use are anything other then hunting gear sets. In the past 15 years I have never seen an issue with non or semi hunting gear sets. This probably dates back to the early days when machining wasn't as good and the teeth were lapped in exactly one way. I don't deal with '53 Buicks with stock parts, so I anin't that worried about it.

This all came about looking at two different 9 inch third members. Both were 60's or 70's era and had timing marks. One was a 2.75:1 the other was a 3.25:1(or something) ford gears.

Those would have been semi hunting gear sets. Every 4th turn and the teeth line up perfectly.
