This is rattlecanned. i did it only because I was moving alot and did not have time for a decent paint job. i had it in primer for a long time and every time I moved, it rained so on went the rattlecan.

I used Duplicolor Truck and SUV paint and also topped with Duplicolor clear.

Worked well for what I needed and did not cost much. The clear goes on way too thin.

Even though I did this and it turned out OK, I would still recommend at least a single stage paint for any durability.

Thanks for all the advice, i've definitely got a lot to think about. I went to a paint supply store today (westco for those who know the area), and they quoted me about $1,000 for paint, hardener, and clearcoat. That's the main reason why I want to rattle-can it, I can't afford that kind of cash right now.

I told him I wanted to use a metallic color, and he highly recommended against a rattle-can job in that situation. I may just primer it and save up the cash for some nice paint. I do have access to 200 gal compressor and a pretty nice spray booth, so maybe i'll just wait a bit. I've put this much work into it already. Thanks guys!

I used a quality Primer that was $75 for a gallon (on sale) of primer and a quart of hardener, which is plenty for several coats. The paint shop I go to sells a 'shop line' paint that runs about $70 for a gallon with reducer and hardner. Add about $40-50 for sand paper, and buy a cheap HVLP gun for $40-100 and a cheap resperator for $20, and you could do a cheap 'quality' paint job for about $300.

I know that's more than a rattle can job, but if you did a rattle can job right your still in $40-50 in sand paper, and add $70-80 in primer, then another $70-80 or more in spray bomb paint. So figure maybe another couple hundred for a better, higher quality paint job that will last several years longer than spray bomb. I would figure 2-5 years for rattle can, and 5-10+ for an economy paint job. A super cheap rattle can job with very minimum prep, and no primer will still realistically run you about $100 by the time your done, and I'd be prepared for it to peal off in about a year or two.

I also forgot to add the cost of tape and paper to keep over spray off of the rest of your Bronco. I'm wrapping up mine and figure I spent about $50-75 on tape, plastic and paper.

Good luck. And don't forget to post your results.

I have gone to a auto paint supply house and had them put a factory paint in a spray can. Their can sprayed better than an off the shelf department store can too. I did my old Ramcharger several times and it lasted several years. Nobody knew it was a rattle can job.

Why not just pick up one of these:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91009
If you have or can borrow a compressor.

They are usually on sale for $9.99. Pick up some cheap acrilic enamel and you will get a much better job for cheaper than buying the 20 or so rattle cans.

After spraying 20 rattle cans your finger will be so f###ed up you will never be able to pick yer nose again. ;D

I painted my baja with Rustoleum Industrial enamel. I rolled it on straight from the can with a foam roller. The key to doing so it looked right was to roll it on just like you would spray it on... over lap 50%, keep the roller loaded and keep moving in one direction per panel. You cant go back and try to touch up or smooth out a spot without starting over on that panel.
Heres pictures of it without sanding or polishing it. If I did it again I would add a hardener agent.

The other thing that baffles me, is why is a gallon of auto paint almost $1000, while a gallon of nice house paint or some other type of paint is $50 give or take. Auto paint can't be THAT much better.

My best guess it that the auto paint have a lot more rare materials in them, then industrial paints. If you look at the auto paints they have more color depth and color array.
The best way I would compare them is auto paint is more "hand carved" and the industrial paint is more "assembly lined". They both can work, but its kind-of what are you looking for and how are you going to use it.
I could also see the paint manufactures have to pay the car manufactures for the "recipe" for their paint?

gloss retention additives , pigments, Uv inhibitors , polymers ..durability,workability ,etc is why the auto paint is much more $ ... for example red or metallic cost much more than white or black i.e. more complex adducts to the paint mix. its not like they are ripping you off just because ...:)

Why would you rattlecan a body?? It cost the same as auto paint has about an 1/8th the durablity and takes longer to paint. Using a sprayer is so much faster. Sorry rattlecan just simply looks terrible. If you want cheap quality paint go with an industrial product. Super tough, wont care if the substrate is perfectly clean and wont be affected by heat, or any fossil product. Its like wiring with but connectors or using solder and heatshrink-- if you want to half-ass it you just get to do it twice-- have some pride in your bronco for goodness sake! Its a bronco not just a retarted ass heep!

If I had your money I would burn mine! I have been painting cars for a lil over 30 years and i have never seen a good quality paint cost as low as anything in a spraybomb! I sprayed my 73 bronco with flat black spray bomb even thou I have about 20 spray guns and 4 sata jets and it looks just as good as it would if you payed someone 5000 dollars to do it.Why because im not spending 300 hours preping knowing that im going to drive places that arent paint friendly. Its all in the prep work if your body work isnt up to par and its not a clean job it dont matter if you pay 20 dollars or 1700 dollars for a gallon of paint. It will look like shyt!

One of the reasons for the differences of opinion in this thread MAY be changes in the quality of rattle can paint over time. That industry claims that that their technology has changed to the extent that you can get a heckuvalot better paint job from a rattle can than you used to be able to. True? I dunno, but the pics of rattle can jobs in this thread look pretty darn good to me.
