I have been having engine woe's since i got my bronco in sept of 03. I did the body work brakes etc, and just started to look at the engine and drive train yesterday. I knew I needed a clutch so I bought one. I put a rebuilt carb on when I got the bronco just to get it running. I could never get it tuned right, always ran rough.
Well now I know why, I did a compression check, #1 90lbs 2 and3
0 lbs 4 5lbs cylinders 6 through 8 all in the 80 to 90 lb range.
Not good! I did some checking and a buddy who is friends with an engine rebuilder got me a brand new 5.0 with gt40 heads for
$1,250.00 ! this is complete, all I need is an intake it is a take out
from some sort of epa emmissions testing program. Does anyone
know what changes, i.e. exhaust manifolds etc. I will have to make to swap this in? originall engine is a 302 3 speed manual.
Thanks
Frank

Should be able to bolt up everythig from your original longblock to the donor and go. The only issue is if it has GT-40-P, -Y, -X heads. There are several GT-40 heads produced by Ford. The GT-40Ps were put on the Explorers, they are supposed to be great flowing heads, but the angles that the exhaust ports/spark plugs are different than all the other regular windsor/GT-40 heads. That can make it difficult if you already have headers and at the least require some fresh pipe to be bent fromt he manifolds back. If they are 40Pheads, you may want to try and get the manifolds too, you may need them, not sure if stock manifolds are amenable to the 40P heads either. If you can find out what the motor came out of or was built for, someone else here will chime in with more specifics, I am sure.

Thanks, I talked to the engine shop and he did say to get a set of late 90's Explorer manifolds.

I wouldn't get explorer headers / manifolds. they are crap and probably won't fit

Are you suggesting the Explorer headers you show at the bottom of the post? and do you sell them if so?

I think he is saying that all the Factory Explorer exhaust sucks. both the cast and the headers. There are people out there running GT40Ps with standard bronco headers. They just have the pain of having to loosen the header from the head to change plugs. Don't know of anyone running Ps with Bronco Cast manifolds.

Then again, it is only an issue if you have the P head.

I'm running a 5.0 with the P heads. Have the FFRP headers which are P specific headers. A little tight on the passenger side but I had exhaust bent to fit, no problem.

First look at the right side....... .........it dumps straight back directly into the firewall.

Second (I'm no rocket scientist) but look at that jumble of flow paths. Those must restrict exhaust flow, reducing power.
The front 2 cross over and tie into the 3rd, it's crazy.

Use the normal Bronco headers, or get the Mustang heawders designed for the "P" heads
