Hello all. I have been re-working my rear bumper to hold 2 jerry cans and a cooler. I am following the design of protofab. I am looking to hold 2 jery cans, 1 for fuel and 1 for water.

The issue I have is that I dont know how to retain the can. I bought 2 of the Blitz jerry can holders, but I dont know what to work up for the latch/retainer at the top. I would like something secure as the trails are very rough. I would also like them to lock. What ideas do you have? I do have a welder so I can adapt other retaining straps ect to meet my needs.

Also, any one know where I can get a Jerry can style jug for use with water?

THANKS!!

Here's how mine looks now with my cooler. It has seen a few incarnations, but this setup works well. Cut out in the cooler basket to access the can. You could make a larger hole if you wanted to and add a second spot for your water. I plan on doing that someday as well. There is plenty of room.
I've seen 5 gallon water Jerry can too. They are blue or just use a NEW Jerry can and use it for water only. Retainer straps are just bungees. Cooler or can never rattles when strapped down, but maybe I just can't hear it over my door rattles. %) ;) ;D

72Eb how about a close up of your rear bumper. I have a protofab rear with the tire carrier and the gas/cooler combo, but I am thinking about building my own.

I would agree about the door rattles.... thankfully the weather striping stopped that... now the window rattles.

I will post some pics of mine so you can see what I am building.

THANKS FOR THE HELP!

Here is what I have built so far...

I dont have the cooler rack built yet, but you can imagine that it will look like most cooler racks on top of a jerry can rack.

I have built a "hoop" between the two cans to mimic the profile of a Jerry can so that I would have a way of mounting a retining strap/latch, ect. What are your ideas?

Not near as nice as yours but it made due and did well on the rubicon, I just used some unistrut to go over the can handles and then bolted it down into the center tube to draw it tight. I got my Blue can from something imports in LA, will have to look.

couldnt really see the clearance between the jerry can and the tailgate but make sure to think about bumps and bumper sway a little bit. I ran into that problem when my gas can made a nice little wear spot on my tailgate. You could probably do a two peice metal strap from one side to the other, stick a eylet where they meet and there is your lock. looks good.

I like the slimline can holders like the one in the link that captures the top and bottom of the can and uses the can itself for the structure.

RT - The latches you built look really slick. I'm planning a rear bumper build and have most the design laid out but have been stuck on a latching mechanism. Do have any close ups of that latch? I like how clean the lines are.

Here are the pics of the latch you guys asked for. I used a 500# 2-jaw door latch for the tire swing arm, and a 300# single jaw latch for the jerry can/cooler arm. I made a plate from 3/16" steel that has mounting holes for both latches. Then I mounted both latches to it and created a tie rod between the latches, so they both release on one motion. I used a second tab on the small latch to weld a paddle on that you push down with your finger to release both latches. I wanted something that was strong, with lots of holding power, and clean looking. The main reason that I came up with this design is I wanted something that didnt stick up. I am planning on moving my bumper up tight to the tailgate while in the open position. I think it hangs too low now. I also like that unless you know how to open it, you cant release the latches. I included a pic of a second 500# 2-jaw latch so you can see what it looks like raw. I think I have some pics of the 2 latches on the mounting plate before it was installed. I will get them posted so you can see what it all looks like inside the bumper. Oh, ya. I cut a portion of my 2x5" tube bumper out to clearance for the latches and bolts. I welded in plate inside the hole that I cut from the bumper to keep the bumper strong and keep stuff from getting inside the bumper.

For all you that think like my brother "that can rack will get ripped off". It doesnt stick out as far as the tire, and its higher than the tire. Also by turning the can bases and making them overlap above the supporting swing arm, the stick out the same as the protofab can rack.

...enjoy...

I was worried about this exact thing. So i sacraficed a little departure angle... no more that the tire already limits, and lift myself about 1 1/4" to the tailgate/body.

Well I used to own this Jeep!;D I still have the Conferr gas can holder that I now use on my bronco. It locks and has served me well for years and years!

I too have a Proto Fab bumper. I just ordered the extra "arm only" for the left side. I am planning on using that blue 5 gallon water jug and "possibly" an ice chest on that same arm. I plan on keeping a very low COG with the set up so I can see out back. I'll post pics when I get there,,,still at least early sept. on that little project! But thats the plans at this point!;D

my apologies to anyone offended by my old jeep!;)

Also, any one know where I can get a Jerry can style jug for use with water?

THANKS!!

Go to a military surplus store and look for a plastic tan jug that looks similar to a fuel can but is meant for only water. You can tell the difference because they only have one handle on the top versus the typical two or three handles for fuel and the cap is a smaller than a fuel jug cap. Not sure what you would pay for them but it is nice to have two different style of jugs to tell the difference between fuel and water. Believe me, in the Army we have two different styles for a reason. Not everyone will go get the water jug when you tell them you need water...

I have looked at the local military store and all they have is old gas cans. I would have thought they had something too. I have seen a lot of plastic jerry style water cans, but feel that i would have to come up with 2 different mounting systems, one for the metal gas can and one for the plastic water can. I did find this can

I think i will buy one just for the ease of mounting it. Then since they are both metal and mount the same way, I can swap their locations in the rack. Has any one bought one? How are they? I am also thinking of drilling in the side and installing a spout so that when you are camping/wheeling and you want a glass of water, or need to wash your hands, ect, it right there.

thanks!

That latch is sweet! Where did you get them?

I will have to check around to see where we got the latches. They are left over from the days of buildling Cobras and MK 2-3 GT-40s. I think they were less than $40 each.

Thanks for the latch explanation and pictures. I hope you don't mind if I use your idea. I was looking for something clean and integrated too, that solves my bumper design hang up. Now I'm out of excuses and need to cut metal. Oh wait, I can still be lazy while ordering the latches!

The Conferr jerry can holder was the one I was trying to describe, but I couldn't think of the name. My business partner had one on his Jeep along with a Conferr cage. They made some good stuff (Conferr that is), are they still around?

I saw these recently at a local 4X4 shop. Similar concept:
