Loading up at idle, cruise, or power? I've never seen an Edelbrock run properly with the factory float level setting. I lowered mine 1/8".

Get yourself a set of metering rod step up springs. They come in a pack and are color coded for different vacuum. I'd try a stiffer set because I'll bet you're leaning out rather than flooding. I use a vacuum gauge with a hose long enough to get the gauge in the car. That way I can drive it and see what the vacuum is at a particular point. The procedure is simple and is covered in your owners manual. http://www.summitracing.com/search/...ck-performer-step-up-spring-kits?autoview=SKU

Also make sure the accelerator pump is working. as if its not that will cause it to fall on its face as well.

Idle is great but when I try to drive it she falls on her face...loading up with fuel

More likely the exact opposite is happening..its falling on its face because it is too lean. Most every Edelbrock I've ever bought and set up was at least a little lean (on acceleration) right out of the box and would bog, stumble, etc. Fewer, but some, were lean on cruise mode too.

The tuning guide describes the steps to take with changes to the jets, needles and lift springs to get it dialed in.

The beauty of the Edelbrock is that once they are dialed in, they stay tuned forever and they do not leak. I'm OK with Holleys but they have a mind of their own sometimes.

We put it on the Dy
no today, y'all were right its way to lean...bought the kit changed the rods and jets to the largest in the kit....the hp went to 198 but its still way to lean....my engine guy is guessing he is saying now that the plugs were not platinum plugs an it may be also starving on power as well

Also looked at the holly truck avenger carb, holly say do not use for street driving because of poor fuel mileage

Sounds like you have other issues a 600 cfm carb is more than even a well built 302 will need. I had to lean a 1406 out 4 steps to get it running good on my 73 bronco with a slightly built 302 small cam, aluminum heads and headers. Maybe you have a vacuum leak or you still dont have the correct step up springs.
Also your engine guy is really guessing platinum plugs wont do diddly squat. dont waste your money. If it was a EFI engine then they may be worth it. But on a carbed engine they are not worth the money.

Holley carbs are really no different than the edelbrock its all tuning that makes the differance. I tuned both a holley and a edelbrock on my 73 and got pretty much the same mileage/driveability. Edelbrock may have a slight edge due to its smaller primary bores but overall there was no real differance when it came to mileage.

Also I wouldnt expect much more than 198hp out of your 302 especailly if your on a chassis dyno if you are thats not to bad. you may also need to play with the timing more.

The metering rod step up springs are calibrated in inches of vacuum. If you can get your vacuum gauge into the car where you can see it while driving, you can pick the springs that will let the metering rods open at the right point so you don't have that bog. Also, your timing mechanical/vacuum advance come into play. It's really all about getting the carb's idle, cruise, and power circuits to work at the right point with the ignition timing.
