Labor Hours to Pull/Reinstall Engine and Auto Transmission

I need some advice on how many labor hours I could reasonably expect to be charged to have my 302 engine and auto transmission pulled out of my 75 stock bronco?

Part 2 of my question, is how many labors hours could I expect to be charged to have the same motor and tranny reinstalled back into my bronco?

I ask this question to the forum because I had a full service family owned shop in Yorktown VA qoute me $2200. This seems very high to me.

Thanks

I could do it in two hours. Then I’d drink beer for two hours and charge you for four.

Depends how well equipped the shop is.

A reasonably equipped shop could likely have it all on the floor in about 4 hours. Maybe 6 to have it all back in and running.

They quoted you that price because they don't want the job.

X2^
Sure there are hoses and fluids that will need replacing with an engine swap, but If you give them twelve hours to do the job, that's $183 per hour.

Was this a straight swap, or was there other assembly work too? Exhaust, clutch, ignition system etc.

The project that I have requested is an estimate for pulling the engine/transmssion out and any parts connected...and reinstall the exact same pulled engine/tranny and all disconnected parts a week later

I want to pull my engine and tranny because I want to do work on the engine bay and transmission tunnel.

What labor hours do you think is reasonable? I was quoted $2200 from a shop in Yorktown VA.

In a shop, it also depends on the condition of the vehicle. More care needs to be taken means more time. In a restored vehicle it takes us about 6 hours to pull, this is ensuring we don’t scratch or damage anything but everything is then prepped to go right back in so it takes about 4 to reinstall. This is engine only. Additional time to add fluids, fire, tune and road test. I would pull the motor separate from the transmission as I’ve dime them both ways and pulling together adds more time and damage potential. In a classic vehicle we give rough estimates but at the end of the day it is always time and materials. We simply are not always facing 40 year old Parts that want to cooperate. Most shops that will repair classics that are worth their salt typically charge more per hour on the classics vs the modern vehicles, it takes skill that most modern technicians are no longer taught.

Why don't you want to get a harbor freight hoist and pop it out in an hour or two yourself? Its really easy when you leave them connected. Just pop the transfer case off, unbolt the cross member and motor mounts and yank her out.

I would bring you my lift and help you do it for free if you were local.

Well said - its never a slam dunk when you are working with old parts, bolts, and nuts. Also: Once the motor and trans are out are they literally setting it on their floor for you to deal with. (remove engine from trans, tcase from trans, mark flywheel, strip block down to longblock form to be built, and or at the miniumum transfer parts to your new powerplant. (are they leaving these parts greasy or testing them at all before reinstallation). TIME TIME TIME. Sure, we can all pull our rockcrawler Bronco's 351 off the NP435 in no time flat just to win a bet, but working on a customers vehicle is way different and shops need to be paid for the hours they log. If not, mechanics will just go to the casino and gamble there in comfort with free drinks...

I have worked on really nice cars where you need to take your time and spend 8 hours removing and documenting everything just to take the engine out. But if you are asking them to remove the engine, strip the engine compartment of wiring, hoses, and all the little bits I could see it getting close to $2k.

BUT if you literally want then to pull your engine and put it back in a week later I would guess 4 to remove and 6 to get it back in and running again. Assuming you are not introducing any wrinkles like new intake, carb, headers, exhaust in the re-install.

THat seems pretty close to right on the money. Particularly if you want it back to work on it and not let them work on it. And they get to have your engine sit there while you do it....

Should just leave the tranny in place and strap it to the frame rails. Just pull the motor, Radiator, power steering and tranny lines. leave the exhaust pipes and work around them. then its 4 hours out and 4 hours in. You can rent a cherry picker. Bronco motors are easy to pull since the hood goes all the way back to the windshield. Just make sure you tie it up there in case it falls by wind or being bumped. Got smacked by that sucker once. Never again.

I just pulled my engine and transmission out 2 weeks ago to start my resto and it took 3hrs with 2 experienced mechanics helping me. As others have mentioned it could take longer if yours in great shape and care is taken not to scratch paint etc. That unfortunately wasn't a concern for me lol.
