I just put the hard top on for the first time in a year and on rough roads, paved ones, I have big rattles. Has anyone come across this and how do I fix it. Note: what goes on the inside of the liftgate just to the right of the handle? And on the inside, the carpet on the tailgate has a cutout like something goes there. Someting else for the liftgate to latch onto?

thanks

I slid a piece of bicycle inner tube over the metal straps on each end of the tailgate. This helped a lot. I think you can replace the metal hinged straps with plastic coated cables from some years of F-150. Not sure of the details. Maybe someone on here could give you the scoop.

As for your second question, there is a small steel strap thingy that sticks up from the tailgate for the lift gate to hook into.

-D

One more thing. You can oil or grease the hinge points. They are basically a tube within a tube and can develop a nasty squeak when they begin to rust.

-D

I am assuming we are talking about the lift gate, not the tailgate. 1966-68 and 69-77 are different. My 77 has a rubber seal that runs from the bed on one side, up and around to the bed on the other side. LMCtruck has a pretty good picture of it in their catalogue, as well as all the rest of the little rubber hummers that help to curb rattles back there.

I have the originals lifts, and once I replaced EVERY PIECE of rubber back there, including the seal at the bottom of the lift gate, all rattles disappeared. The liftgate bumper set is cheap but very important!

Its not a huge expense, couldn't have been more than 60.00 for everything I bought. It was worth every penny to me.

dpm

Replacing all the little snubbers and seals on the tailgate and liftgate makes a BIG difference.Sure helped on mine.
It sounds like you are also missing the "anti-theft post" that goes on the tailgate. It's basically a peg that fits into a notch on the bottom of your liftgate.Keeps the tailgate from being opened while the liftgate is locked.
I think it's called an anti-rattle tab and it's a metal tabl that screws to the back or your tailgate. When you close the lift gate and turn the handle it locks the tailgate and liftgate together. Replacing it could solve some of your problems. I happen to have an extra lying around that I might be willing to part with. They are somewhat hard to find. I was planning to list it on Ebay for $15 + shipping. If you're interested let me know. I can even send you a pic if you like.

If you look in any resto catalogue, it shows the 66-68 as a two piece, and the 69-77 as a one piece. Also the water directional draining parts are in different places. Look at LMCtrucks catalogue, or Duff, or anyone that sells that stuff.

I do wonder if the tops are different as well. Anyone?

dpm

i found that if i used some thinck heat shrink over the "anti rattle tab" it really quieted down the noise on mine. if you have all the snubber, and weatherstripping in place that are in good shpe you should be ready to go.
i think the tab is more so to be able to secure the truck, since if the liftgate is locked, you can't open the tailgate. the early models didn't have it.

Installing the backing plate for the tab is a little tricky.I just did mine last week. Here's what I did:
-remove tailgate handle assmbly
-open tailgate
-fish a 20"or so lenghth of sewing tread with a coat hanger to the far hole
-feed the other end of thread through the mounting plates holes, down then up
-then take the end you just feed and fish it to the other hole
-carefully pull the plate through the tailgate to line up with the holes
--feed each end of the thread through the holes of the anti-rattle post
-get bolts ready
-position post
-pull up on string till holes line up(both ends)
-first bolt in just enough to grab thread, repeat with second bolt
-As you tighten bolts they will cut string....

::) :p :)
