Linkage question

Hello Bronco family,

This is my first post so hopefully I make sense here. I recently changed the clutch on my 67 bronco, its a manual three on the tree. I reconnected everything and fired it up and the truck will go into 2nd and 3rd gear but will not go into reverse or 1st gear unless I switch it into reverse from underneath at the transmission itself. I have placed a drill bit into the steering column and lined up the gear linkage and adjusted the shift rods and still no go. I have exhausted all that I know and looking for either some advise or a good mechanic here in the Los Angeles area that works on early broncos, please advise, all feedback is welcome.

thanks

Mark

What happens to the linkages, shift arms, and shifter on the column when you shift it into first and reverse from underneath? Do all of those parts move when shifting from below?

I know you can't see them yourself while doing so, but have a helper look and see what's going on there when shifted from below. If something isn't moving then, that's where you should start looking for a disconnected or loose linkage.

Hey Cashmow, good to see you posting. Sorry it's about a problem we're having though.
Did you change anything else while you were doing the clutch? No body lift or anything like that? Removing and reinstalling the transmission went pretty smoothly? No possibility that anything might have gotten bent up or anything during the removal or a reinstallation process?
And if not then maybe some thing peripheral just decided it was time to let go. A common failure point in the shifter is the shift tube itself inside the column. So as Justin was saying you need to verify everything is moving when you are moving the shift lever. Maybe with the hood up you can actually peek around the edge while you're pulling the shift lever to see if everything is moving like it should.

If the lever moves into those positions but nothing happens at the transmission then it's the linkage. But if when trying to shift it simply won't move into those positions, then it could be the linkage, the clutch, or the transmission itself.
Did you separate the transmission from the transfer case when you pulled it apart? Or did you pull them away from the bell housing together?

Good luck!

Yeah, maybe you've got some members nearby that can come look under the hood while you row the lever around a bit.

Hope it's something simple and obvious. Shift tubes are a bit of a pain. Generally not available, you have to fix them yourself.
