On my 77 with power steering there is a knuckle or u joint that connects the lower steering shaft to the output shaft on the steering box. How is the upper side of the knuckle connected to the lower steering shaft ?

Splined, threaded, press fit ?

Are you talking about the pitman arm? the part that attaches driectly to the output shaft of the box? That is held in place by a large nut, then once removed you needto rent or buy a pitman puller. Attachh the puller and tighten, let sit overnight, tighten more, and keep doing that till it pops off. Be sure to spray w/ penatrating lube whenever the thought crosses your mind.

No I'm talking about the lower steering shaft that is in between the steering box and the steering wheel.

I beleive that it is splined, at least all of the aftermarket ones are. I doubt that it would be press fit due to the fact that it is steering. Mine was man steer, so I am not 100%.
