Primarily looking in the southern part of state.

Can't say for sure, I'd guess yes. Two small ski areas nearby. We've rented places further north for the entire winter to ski. I like the area in large part due to decent people, excepting politicians, but that's pretty much true everywhere.

What about vehicle emissions testing for cars? Michigan doesn't do that correct?

Come on over and up to the Mitten State. What's on your check list of must haves? I live in the SE part of the state & for me the SW is where I would want to retire. What sort of recreation situations would you enjoy? How close to a big city do you need or want to be? Looking for property or a house in a neighborhood?
Whatever you are looking for I'm sure you will find it here.

Gotta have a minimum of 10 acres.

I don't want to live in a city anymore, want to be more rural

Not a hunter, but I definitely would love to be able to shoot steel targets on my own property.

I would like to get better at shooting trap and skeet

Must have a shop for my Bronco/projects.

Wouldn't mind getting into fishing

Want be within 2hrs of international Airport

I believe Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids have good VA facilities.

I want to travel to car gatherings........

Sounds like a good list - I'd start looking at the southwest corner but honestly you can find a place that checks the boxes all over southern MI. One thing to keep in mind is the closer you are to Lake Michigan the more lake effect snow you'll see. Not an issue for some but others may not enjoy that.

Car Shows/Cruises also happen wherever you end up.

Gilmore Museum near Kalamazoo has a cruise every Wednesday all summer that I have heard is really good - https://carcruisefinder.com/michiga...-your-west-michigan-chevy-dealers/2023-09-06/

Southeast side has Stahl"s auto museum that I know has benefits for veterans & others. https://www.stahlsauto.com/

Grew up outside of Lansing and left for the Navy in the early 80's. IF I ever went back, I'd look for property near Hastings. It is a small, rural town near the Battle Creek VA hospital. Grand Rapids is a short drive and has the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

Were you a P-3 guy?

I was an AW on SH-60Bs

Not sure if those helicopters or that rating exists anymore

Northern MI has all of those thing you’re looking for as well and a lot less people. Lot of lakes and a laid back lifestyle. I believe there is a VA hospital in Saginaw.

Consider SE Mich.

Lots of Bronco people here. I'm in Howell and I can check all of your boxes. Country setting, within 1 hour of Detroit Metro Airport, within one hour of Flint Airport

LOTS of lakes around here to fish, plenty of conservation clubs and state park shooting ranges. Plenty of properties with barns/ space to build one, Livingston county is very Red, if that's the type of thing that you're into, and within 30 mins of Ann Arbor (where there are VA facilities)

Feel free to pm me if I can help.

Eric

Howell is definitely in the area we are looking. Property taxes are all over the place depending on what county you are in.

As far as red or blue, I'm not interested in the extremes of either of those groups.

Same. Meant it mostly as a fiscal / governmental standpoint, not a social issues one.
